We have written several times about the presidential racesuch as it isin Minnesota. Neither party has done much of anything here, yet the polls are surprisingly close. Our consensus has been that, tantalizing though the thought may be, it is not realistic to think that Minnesota could be in play.
So I was surprised to receive an email from Maya Angelou, a little while ago, urging me to be sure to vote:
From: Maya Angelou Subject: Pretty or plain, heavy or thin, gay or straight, poor or rich Date: October 24, 2012 5:02:14 PM CDT To: John Hinderaker Reply-To: democraticparty@democrats.org
Minnesota and a handful of other states are going to decide this election. Every vote counts, and you probably have friends and family who need a friendly reminder. Use our Facebook app to ask your friends in Minnesota and other battleground states to commit to vote today.
And please read Dr. Angelous note below and forward it far and wide. Inspire everyone you know to vote.
Dear John,
I am not writing to you as a black voter, or a woman voter, or as a voter who is over 70 years old and six feet tall. I am writing to you as a representative of this great country as an American.
It is your job to vote. It is your responsibility, your right, and your privilege. You may be pretty or plain, heavy or thin, gay or straight, poor or rich.
But remember this: In an election, every voice is equally powerful dont underestimate your vote. Voting is the great equalizer.
Your vote might make the difference. Dont fool around with this get the information you need to vote in this election.
As a country, we can scarcely perceive the magnitude of our progress.
My grandmother and my uncle experienced circumstances that would break your heart. When they went to vote, they were asked impossible questions like, How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? When they couldnt answer, they couldnt vote.
I once debated with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. about whether an African American would ever be elected president. He believed it would happen within the next 40 years at the time I believed it would never happen within my lifetime.
I have never been happier to have been proven wrong.
And since President Barack Obamas historic election, weve moved forward in courageous and beautiful ways. More students can afford college, and more families have access to affordable health insurance. Women have greater opportunities to get equal pay for equal work.
Yet as Rev. King wrote, All progress is precarious.
So dont sit on the sidelines. Dont hesitate. Dont have any regrets. Vote.
Go, rise up, and find out what you need to do to vote and ask your friends to join you. We must make our voices heard:

Your vote is not only important. Its imperative.
Thank you,
Dr. Maya Angelou
P.S. Not on Facebook? Send your friends to vote.barackobama.com dont let technology get in the way of your incredible duty to our democracy.
So, do the Democrats really believe that Minnesota is one of a handful of states that will decide the election? Or is this just boilerplate that the Dems are sending to their faithful in every state where they arent actually campaigning? Im guessing the latter, but would be interested to hear from our readers as to whether they are seeing similar efforts in states not normally considered to be in play. For what its worth, the idea that the Democrats could be worried about Minnesotaif truewould be one more data point in what is shaping up as a very good year for Republicans.
Kind of reduces her to the basic racist hack, doesn’t it?
But, but, but, it’s not a black thing.
Hey 2ndDivisionVet, hope everything is going good in your neck of the woods. I see Maya is stoking the racist flames. Dr King must be rolling in his grave knowing the majority of the black population will never be able to judge a man “by the content of their character and not the color of their skin”.
I would love to be proven wrong, but Minnesota will never be in play. Minnesota - the only blue state in 1984, Jesse Ventura, Al Franken. Like I said before, I dont know what is wrong with those people. Here in Wisconsin, we are going RED this year.
Walter Mondale
Jesse Ventura
Al Franken
Obama doesn’t need to worry about the asshats in Minn.
Who the heck is “Maya Angelou”?
MN has a DFL/Communist Governor and DFL/mafia appointed Secretary of State. Both of whom were subsidized in their election bids by Soros and the Unions.
MN will remain Democrat until we start hanging them from lamp posts...
Did you see that Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama again today, like he did in 2008?

A famous black female poet and writer who used to be a prostitute, night club dancer and is now a college instructor.

I think Eddie Murphy’s poem about his landlord was far superior to anything Ms. Angelou has ever penned.
Thanks.

There, fixed.
It shouldn’t be surprising if Minnesota is close. Obama won Minnesota by (a little over) 10%, and nationally by (a little over) 7%. So if Romney is up by 3% nationally, Minnesota should be close (10-7=3).
The same applies to Pennsylvania.
He should win Ohio going away (by around 5 points or so). The Obama ground game, auto workers, ads, etc. can help bring this down, but 5 points is a lot (i.e., if Romney does 10 points better than McCain nationally, one would expect Romney to carry Ohio by 5 points).
He won MN by less of a margin than he won Iowa by, and Romney is going to win Iowa, which is attached to MN (and I assume voters on the borders are similar)...so why not?
Also, the gay marriage thing will definitely bring out conservatives who may not have voted - and once there they will definitely be voting against Obama.
