Obama Campaign Fears Impact of Hurricane Sandy

A top aide to Barack Obama voiced fears Sunday that Hurricane Sandy could hurt the president's re-election chances by reducing turnout, as the impending storm forced both candidates to cancel campaign stops.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney received good news in two key swing states, winning the endorsement in Iowa of the main newspaper, the Des Moines Register, and tying Obama in a newly-released poll in all-important Ohio.

But nine days out from the nailbiter November 6 election, all eyes were on Hurricane Sandy and how the potentially catastrophic storm might play out on the neck-and-neck race for the White House.

"Obviously we want unfettered access to the polls because we believe that the more people come out, the better we're going to do," senior Obama strategist David Axelrod told CNN.

"And so to the extent that it makes it harder, you know, that's a source of concern," he said.

Democrats desperately need to rally Obama supporters as Romney surged into the lead in national polls following a commanding first debate victory on October 3 and his momentum shows little sign of evaporating.

With the storm due to hit late Monday or early Tuesday, Obama and Romney scrambled to revamp their schedules in the hectic final stretch of a campaign that has seen them criss-cross the main battlegrounds on a near-daily basis...

Sandy will affect NC, MD, PA, VA coast, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA (maybe).

The only place that might matter is Philly in PA. The rest of PA will only be marginally affected; everything else is pretty solid Obama.

A study found that just 1 inch of rain will cut the Democratic vote by 2.5%. Republicans should pray for rain. The Democrats should be worried. Republican do pray.

I love how Romney has been at 50% and up 3-4-5 in both Gallup and Rasmussen for 2 weeks, but it’s a “neck and neck race.”

If the other way around, the race would be Obama’s to lose, Romney playing from behind, trending strongly to Obama, etc.

I'm sure that Obama will find a way to blame this hurricane on President George W Bush!

I fear Sandy too! I fear it will be used as an excuse to allow “those poor people” extra days to vote, thereby allowing the manufacture of votes. And don't think this group of thugs won't try to extend the voting time, breaking the law is a daily fun exercise for them.

I don’t see how. We don’t have a nationwide popular vote. We have the electoral college. It seems unlikely to switch NY from blue to red, or even PA or VA.

Maybe they are trying to lay the foundation for the excuse machine, though.

This storm will at least cut down on any early fraudulent voting.

A depressed turnout in Philadelphia and to a lesser extent Pittsburgh would hurt Obama. Hasn’t PA been trending towards Romney?

It will assure Romney winning the popular vote if the storm is very bad. Marginal voters will stay home to clean up and Obama will not run up big vote counts in New York Metro, CT, Ri, Md, Ma, etc. Only place it can affect electoral vote is Pa like you said. If Philly is powered down for a while turnout there may suffer.

But election day is November 6th and that is it. No national election has ever been postponed and neither willo tis one.

If it washed out the roads from Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, etc it would cut Dem turnout in Pa in half...
but that’s not likely to happen.

It most likely will sit over western Pa, hurting Romney’s vote.

They’re doing this to set up legal challenges: “boohoo, the hurricane kept Democrats from voting early, etc.”

Watch for it.

After the election, if Obama loses, Karl Rove may step forward to take credit for the hurricane.

Yep, I don't expect to celebrate Obama's loss election night, he will drag it out just like Gore and Kerry did, we will never see a Dem concede on election night again

Re Heavy snow knocking out power to conservative Western PA:

I hear from my boy who has meteorological training, that in the Pittsburgh area (South-Western PA) some snow is expected, but it’s also expected to be very wet, several inches, and rapidly melt.
