Gun control lessons from Lyndon Johnson (Lays out their game plan)
The Washington Post ^ | December 16, 2012 | Secretary Joseph A. Califano Jr.

Posted on 12/16/2012 10:05:48 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

If ever there were a moment for President Obama to learn from history, it is now, in the wake of Friday’s shootings at the elementary school at Newtown, Conn. The timely lesson for Obama, drawn from the experience of Lyndon B. Johnson — the last president to aggressively fight for comprehensive gun control — is this: Demand action on comprehensive gun control immediately from this Congress or lose the opportunity during your presidency.

In the aftermath of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy (just weeks after the fatal shooting of Martin Luther King Jr. and only a few years after President John F. Kennedy was shot), President Johnson pressed Congress to enact gun control legislation he had sent to Capitol Hill years earlier. LBJ ordered all of us on his staff — and urged allies in Congress — to act swiftly. “We have only two weeks, maybe only 10 days,” he said, “before the gun lobby gets organized.” He told Larry O’Brien and me, “We’ve got to beat the NRA [National Rifle Association] into the offices of members of Congress.”

For three years Johnson’s bill had been locked in the Senate Judiciary Committee by a powerful army of gun lobbyists. But LBJ was always poised to grasp any opportunity to achieve his legislative objectives, even in the most horrendous circumstances. He had used the tragedy of King’s assassination in 1968 to “at least get something for our nation” out of it, finally persuading the House to pass the Fair Housing bill he had sent it in 1966. Johnson saw in the tragedy of the assassination of Robert Kennedy in June of 1968 a chance to get his gun bill enacted...

It’s too late to ban assault rifles, the bad guys already have them.

It's not about them going after the bad guys.

Never has been.

The ironic part of this is that LBJ may have been behind what happened to JFK.

Frankly, and I have no idea how, I have a gut feeling Obama may be behind this. Everything is just too damned convenient. RIGHT after the election? RIGHT before Christmas? The age of the victims? Right, just a cowinky-dink.

Speaking of the British..I came across this today..Everyone in favor of new gun laws should view it. We are being fed myths left and right for the sake of the leftist agenda. Everyone is feeling crushing pain over what happened in CT but to blame what is not to blame is to further punish our people, which is the lifeblood of those who are looking for tyranny and, also, for those who want to make it look like they are doing something even if that something could not be more wrong. If you need some proof of the madness, take a look at this film.

Yeah, LBJ told his staff to get on it .... right after he finished dancing a jig in delight over the death of the other Kennedy he hated.

How does one confiscate over 400 million firearms and billions of rounds of ammunition from 320 million people with only just over one million troops and police?

One at a time, I’m afraid, one at a time. On the other hand the actual people doing the ground work may find out a very unpleasant truth. It won’t be as easy in practice as it was on paper.

Curious. I Googled the phrase just now. Your FR post was on the first page along with other gun forum posts and some translation pages.

Google is either that good - or they have retooled their engine to funnel gun posts to the government....Freaky....

The Brits taught us this much. If you would be prepared to use a firearm to protect your life, even at the cost of persecution by your government, you should have used them BEFORE that day to prevent the latter from ever having occurred.

I wonder just to whom will the unpleasant task of collecting millions of firearms fall? It should be very interesting. I suppose this might be one way to reduce the size of gummint! Just imagine, every ATF employee quits the day they are told it is their job. Then Zero can tell the FBI and they can quit. Who knows how far down the list he can go. Can you imagine him getting down to telling the folks at the Dept. of Energy it is their job cuz they are all that is left?

That would be nice! Government reduction in action. How it will be done would be quite different.

First there would be the voluntary turn-in which will fail. Then the ATF will descend on the various FFL license holders and rescind their licenses and collect up all of their sales paperwork which then give them the address and names of gun-buyers/owners.

That’s when the hue and cry will become intense. After that all bets are off, unlike in Soviet Russia when the KGB came for the “dissidents” one by one we now have better communication methods. And yes, the Government CAN turn off the internet and cell phones etc., word of mouth still exists and rumors and gossip still seem to travel at the speed of light.

I wonder if the media would be invited to come along to record Uncle Joe and Aunt Edna’s home being raided by SWAT and their bodies brought out in body-bags because they were “Evil” gun owners. How will that play in the community? Who would be next? At what point will the body count exceed the number of children and adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in whose name this is being done? When would the tables turn on the grabbers? When would the Civil War start?

I wrote the following for another thread last week before Sandy Hook occurred, it seems even more prescient now.

I’ve been thinking about the possibility of an upcoming civil war. Any thinking, feeling human being should be scared out of their wits of the thought of one. With that said though... I have to admit that it’s pretty much inevitable. There is too much anger, too much hatred, too much loathing that has been building up for years now.

How it will start I have no idea, but unlike the last time it won’t be a war between the states. This time it will be a war on a true civil scale, neighbors or neighborhoods against each other, the citizenry against the bureaucracy. I feel that once it starts it will be true anarchy before the sides coalesce.

Historically most civil wars are instigated by the intelligentsia and some of the “upper crust” who for various reasons want to put themselves up even higher on the ladder looking down at the peons they have fooled into supporting the. In many ways this one is going to come about the same way. The College Professors who promote Marxist ideas, the MSM journalists and commentators that spread the ideas even further by slanted or even false news stories and memes.

And finally by our own elected officials and unelected bureaucrats in government. They do it by making up even more oppressive laws and regulations and turning the government into a “protection racket” demanding more and more money and resources all of the time to feed it’s unending appetites.

So how it will start is still unknown, how it will end is also. All I do know is that no one will emerge unscathed if it does.

*********************************************
“May Have Been” ... LBJ’s company built the RR trestle in 1937 , only 26 years prior (adjacent to the “knoll” ) and the culvert/tunnel for rain drainage that was the ACTUAL SNIPERS POSITION for the JFK assasination in 1937 ... A Dallas policeman admitted to being the assasin on his deathbed and the tunnel leads from the knoll to a location very near the police station he worked out of. Who had TEXAS connections? I think LBJ was shocked that Oswald turned up to complete the fairy tale , a happy coincidence.

"Why can't we just go our way and they go their way?"

That is not the totalitarians' way. They want power and control. They want a subjugated mass of serfs to lord over. They want to be able to use the lash of the whip on the backs of freedom lovers. They will never let us go. The US will either die with a whimper or free itself with blood. There is no longer another option.
