“You have to deal with this issue. You can’t ignore it, and so either a path to citizenship, which I would support–and that does put me probably out of the mainstream of most conservatives–or … a path… to residency of some kind,” he said during an interview last week with Charlie Rose on CBS.
Bush’s position diverges from that of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who oppposes amnesty, supports the use of e-verify to stop businesses from hiring illegal immigrants, and has promised to build a “high-tech” fence to help secure the border.
Too stale? Here’s what he said just six weeks ago:
The only alternatives to increased immigration are mounting debts or reduced social services. A practicable system of work-based immigration for both high-skilled and low-skilled immigrants—a system that will include a path to citizenship—will help us meet workforce needs, prevent exportation of jobs to foreign countries and protect against the exploitation of workers…
Immigrants replenish the American spirit. Most immigrants come here to secure a better life for themselves and their families. They cherish the values of hard-work, faith, family, enterprise and patriotism that have made this country great. Meanwhile, many who were lucky enough to have been born here have grown complacent or even disdainful of these values. America’s immigration system should provide opportunities for people who share the country’s core values to become citizens, thereby strengthening the nation as have countless immigrants have before them.
Is there any obvious explanation for this reversal besides him watching Rubio roll out the Senate bipartisan bill, suddenly realizing that his 2016 niche on immigration had now been filled...

It all depends from which direction the political winds blow.
Perhaps Jeb should first send out plenty of “surveys” attached to requests for money before making his final decision.
As a Floridian, I always liked Jeb’s performance as governor. But his stance on immigration and belief in the green energy fairy were deal breakers for me if he ran for president.
I don’t know Jeb’s current stance on green energy, but if his position on immigration has indeed “evolved”, I’ll take Jeb over Rubio.

I reluctantly support permanent residency for “Dream Act” children, but NO PATH TO CITIZENSHIP.
He thinks it’s safe to pander to the bubbas because he knows the issue will be decided, and we’ll have 6 million new citizens, by the time the primaries come around.
As a fellow Floridian, I can remind you that there is no such thing as an “evolved” position with any Florida politician. These “evolved” politicians always play by RINO Crist, Marco Rubio rules — any lie that is politically expedient goes. Once they have safely reached their sought after office, they become whatever they want to be.
Although he was an excellent governor, I don’t want Jeb to become president and I will not support his RINO/anti-sovereignty ambitions.

He didn't succeed.
I agree that another Bush will never get elected. But that means the GOP will run him for sure.
The real “path to citizenship” crosses a bridge southbound over the Rio Grande.
I understand all that. But we don’t get to pick who runs for the presidency. We generally end up having to pick the best of a mediocre litter, as we did with Romney. Perhaps we will get a candidate we really like and is also electable, but I’m not holding my breath.
If Jeb runs, I won’t vote. No way. No more RINOs, no more Bushes.
The bad news: This kind of strategic flip-flopping worked for Romney. He proclaimed himself to be “severely conservative” on the basis of having cynically repudiated pretty much everything he’d previously said along with what he’d done as Governor.
The good news: Romney’s unprecedented level of deceit, coupled with his defeat in November, have enlightened many of the Republicans who were willing to take him at face value. I don’t think Jeb will be able to pull a Romney.
Jeb Bush flip flops all the time.
