Eleanor Clift: Paul Ryan, Still a Darling to Republicans, Is Quietly Getting Ready for 2016
The Daily Beast's Politics Beast ^ | August 8, 2013 | Eleanor Clift

Can anybody unite a party that’s at war with itself? That’s the question Republicans are asking, and the answer might be former vice-presidential contender Paul Ryan, whose low profile amidst the intra-party squabbling suggests he is deftly positioning himself as Speaker in waiting or the GOP’s last best hope for 2016—either way a Hobson’s choice given the demoralized state of the party.

Ryan wrote the budget that balances in 10 years, and that helped bring Congress to its knees, unable to find the votes to pass any of its traditional priorities, a farm bill or a transportation bill, much less a kinder, gentler budget that could get Democratic votes. With Republicans holding out for deep spending cuts, Ryan decamped to his Wisconsin district, assuring his constituents that he stands ready to help them navigate the challenges of enrolling in Obamacare even as he pledges to continue working to delay implementing the law.

It’s the kind of balancing act that the 43-year-old Ryan has gotten good at, acting and sounding like the grownup who seeks compromise while still keeping lines open to the Tea Party wing of his party that opposes any accommodation with Democrats. “He knows how to use the words that are magic words for the Right without sounding like some lunatic,” says Norman Ornstein with the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank....

I hope Ryan gets an earful from his constituents during the recess. He needs to wake up.

None of these purported front runners appeals to me. Allen West, Ted Cruz and Steve King would. As for the rest of ‘em, I’m taking the tact of the unimpressed potential real estate buyer.... “Nah.. What else ya got?”

As far as I'm concerned, the Republican Party doesn't have any serious contender who would get my vote. Every one of them — Ryan, Rubio, Christie, Jeb — are all liberal.

Yes. We should all vote for a guy in his 40s who has never had a job.

Worked so well, for us, with the current slob in office.

I was in a rather passionate argument with a FReeper a couple of nights ago who condemned me for posting my sentiments regarding the GOPe. It seems there are a few FReepers who insist that the lesser of two evils is not evil at all. I understand his concern about a third party; however, it seems my votes have been for politicians that will do exactly as the Democrats. I may as well have pulled the lever for the guys with the Ds after their names! So what do we have to lose? If a third party splits the ticket, we get a lberal office holder. If there is no third party and the R wins, we get a liberal office holder.

That stuff about third parties is designed to keep people voting for one or the other established liberal party. I believe a strong conservative party could mop the floor. The third party needs ample financial resources, leadership that can organize and mobilize effectively and strong, articulate and thoroughly vetted conservative candidates. Give people a real choice and they will flock to the right candidates.

Ryan did a horrible job during his debates with Biden. Biden really caught him when he brought up the letter Ryan had written asking for pork for his district. And in every other respect, Ryan was mealy-mouthed and appeasing. No thank you.

The old crone, sitting on a high post, wakes to the sound of the noisy arguments occurring below her.

With a shuffling of her wings, she repositions her scruffy behind and looks down her boney beak disdainfully at the source of the noise.

Arching her shoulders slightly, she releases what she considers to be a an intellectual diatribe towards the noisy group.

Hearing her, someone in the crowd below yells out: "Where is that awful screeching coming from?"

To what Republicans? The GOPe and business leaders, perhaps.

But I’m thinking he’s done with the folks that pull the levers. Hope that’s the case. His true colors, like his Cuban buddy from Florida, have come thru.
