Why Jewish Americans vote Democratic
The Manchester Guardian ^ | October 2, 2013 | Harry J. Enten

Posted on 10/03/2013 2:32:27 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

A striking aspect of the new Pew survey on Jewish Americans is how liberal Jews are. Is it good for the Democrats? You bet.

Why do people vote the way to do? For swing voters, the answer is usually the state of the economy. For most, however, voting patterns are surprisingly fixed. People tend to vote for one party consistently over time. For Jewish American voters, the party of choice has been the Democratic party.

Conservatives have been trying to crack the code for a number of years on how to get Jewish voters over to their side. Based on the findings of the new "Portrait of Jewish Americans" survey from the Pew Research Center, Republicans will need to find a different key. Jews are likely going to be Democrats for the foreseeable future.

Let's start with the fact that the most important determining factor of voting pattern is partisan affiliation. If you identify as a Democrat, you are far more likely to vote Democratic than if you identify as an independent or a Republican. In this instance, 70% of Jews self-identify as leaning to or members of the Democratic party. That compares with just 49% of the American public overall who at least lean Democratic. Only 22% of Jews consider themselves as leaning Republican, compared to 39% of the overall public. Orthodox Jews, who represent no more than 10% of the United States' Jewish population, tend to make up the majority of Republican Jews.

Given their self-identification, it's unlikely that Jewish Americans will break from their Democratic ways. But a closer look at why Jews are Democratic should give Republicans further pause....

Silly comment. What percentage of blacks were Republican from 1860 to 1964? What percentage were from 1976 to today? Those biases can be changed relatively quickly by the right circumstances.

I get so sick of hearing this, so let me correct the article and any like it.

NOBODY VOTES "DEMOCRATIC!" EVER! That is as inaccurate as stating that we live in a Democracy when we live in a Republic.

They vote "Democrat" and while Democrats these days believe in "democracy;" they are hardly "democratic."

The Holocaust is central to their identity as slavery is to many blacks. I found that interesting.

I find it telling that the article goes into minute detail and extended depth as to why Jews believe this or that or vote a certain way. The most telling aspect of the article is that it neglects to mention that the Jewish population of the US is between 2 and 3% last time I checked.

Help me understand.
Are you saying that the Civil rights movement was the turning point for Blacks towards the democrats or was it the Great Society? I always thought it was the New Deal.

I have been siding with Jews in International issues since I was in high school 50 years ago, but I am now done with them. They overwhelmingly vote DemoRat and helped elect an antisemite President here. So, they are on their own as far as I am concerned. Screw them.

People who place a disproportionate importance on their genital activities tend to vote Democrat. Take Bill and Hillary for example. He could not wait to get home from church on Easter Sunday in order to be fellated by Monica. And then there’s Hillary with her lesbian assistant - wife to Weiner. Now there’s Weiner who thinks his genitals are more important than most people care. You can go down the list of Democrats who fill the bill.

Sir, as a Conservative, NRA member, Republican Jew, you should know that there are many (not nearly enough) Jews out there who think like you.

Instead of “screwing” the Jews (or any other group) we need to argue, convince and TRY to show them the error of their ways. I have succeeded in convincing family members, who voted (unfortunately) for Obama in 2008 to drop him in 2012. As a Jew, there is always hope but not the Obamian HOPE...

I am a Conservative, Republican Jew and this is my take:

Jews vote for Liberal causes because they suffer from the disease of blind Liberalism and historically have always welcomed CHANGE, progress, justice and diversity. Who would have known that these factors would get completely out of control?

Jews as the underdog throughout history forced them into a position where they always sought change, usually via some kind of radical or revolutionary movement. From Socialism, Communism, women's suffrage, Worker's rights, civil rights, women's rights and anti-war movements, they've always focused on changing a status quo because JEWS ARE NEVER SATISFIED with the current state of affairs. They always dream of improving something or some group (other than their own, for example, in Israel too).

They wanted to improve their standing in every nation they resided in. Can you blame them? Unfortunately almost all of these waves of change that they participated in backfired on them.

I do not understand, why such an ancient and persecuted people like the Jews still CLING to causes that do not help them.

In the Bible, it states that the Hebrews were (are) a “stiff-necked” people, (stubborn). It is my challenge to twist those stiff necks into leather necks. I am not giving up, it is a lifetime battle.

Right on both counts.

Blacks ignore that it was Republicans who fought to end slavery while democrats fought to uphold it; every Jim Crow law was written by a democrat, etc.
Jews, on the other hand, ignore that the Holocaust was perpetrated by socialist, pagan, homosexualist leftists; not conservative Christians as is popularly misrepresented.

“we need to argue, convince and TRY to show them the error of their ways. “

Don’t show them the error of their ways, educate them as to what high minded liberalism has done to blacks and other minorities. In 1964 the black prison population was the same percentage as they were in society as a whole, 12-15%. Then, “The Great Society” happened. Democrats used the KKK as their military arm for 100 years. The architects of the Holocaust were the German SOCIALIST party, not the German Right Wing Party.

I suspect many Jews became lifelong Jews when they first came to the U.S. back in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Dem Party was the party that readily accepted immigrants into its fold while the Republican Party, run by the eastern country club elites in those days, rejected immigrants....especially Jews. Rich, Protestant elites who voted Republican were the ones who kept Jews out of their country clubs and discriminated against them in other areas. Attitudes die hard.

I see very Liberal Jews as a flaw or deficit in education. I do not blame a Jew who is churned out from a Liberal community, you can't “blame” them, they too, are victims.

One quick fix is to have them visit Israel and see what Jews are capable of. When you see rifle-welding Jewish men and women, you have to shake your head and begin asking questions.

The Jews of Israel face death every friggin’ day at the hands of Arabs and Islamicists. They have no choice but to DEFEND themselves and their position AND back it up with a firepower deterrent.

A visit to Israel will perhaps start the ball to roll in their heads.

I saw that too but the point was clear.

This foolish devotion to FDR and the RAT party was actually passed down from the WWII generation to their Baby Boomer kids JUST in time for Vietnam! What a cocktail of doom!

That meant that many of them opposed the war, see Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman and even Bob Dylan (real name Robert Zimmerman), Daniel Elsberg (Pentagon Papers) were anti-establishment and by 1974 had tossed Nixon and US support for Vietnam into the trash bin.

So, being a RAT in “Tradition” has replaced classic Jewish tradition to the Torah and Conservatism to the point now that unfortunately, the Boomer children and grandchildren push the Obamian, Homo-diversity agenda instead of looking out for their own people.

Torah learning has been replaced by the cries for “Justice” for the bisexual, beached whales or Trans-gender geese!! Save them!!!

Betrayal for the Israelis is not just anger and frustration but putting them in the intentional situation where they will be forced to attack Iran and take a lot of incoming.

The world was asleep in 1938, and she was asleep in 1981 when the Israelis decimated Saddam's nuclear facility, yet again in 2005 and 2007 knocking out Syria's nuclear facilities.

Why does the fate of the world always rest on that tiny country and people? Israel is about the size of New Jersey for crissakes!

True, America was asleep and slow to react before December 7th 1941. We have a tendency to kick the can down the road and we're doing it again under the “leadership”(?) of Obama. Ignoring Iran now and engaging them in endless BS dialog will only bring us to a major war with them down the road.

I’m a member of a Reform Jewish congregation, and I’ve heard Mona Charon describe Reform Judaism as the Democratic Party with holidays. I have no doubt that our current Rabbi is liberal, but he keeps his politics off of the pulpit, and gives great sermons.

His predecessor delivered a lot of sermons that could have been summed up in two words, “Bush sucks.” It would have saved a lot of time.

2,000 years of oppression has made Jews wary. The Democrats have been very good at exploiting that wariness. I can’t seem to get it through the thick skulls of my stiff-necked fellow Jews that modern America is different, and why it is different.

Jews vote for Liberal causes because they suffer from the disease of blind Liberalism

In one political sense, Jews are no different from Gentiles: just as liberal-churched (ELCA, PCUSA, UMC, Episcopal) and non-churched Gentiles tend to be Democrats/Greens, while small-o orthodox-churched (LCMS, ARP, SBC, AOG, traditional Catholics) Gentiles tend to be Republicans/Libertarians, Reform, Reconstructionist, and non-synagogue Jews tend to be Democrats/Greens, while Orthodox and Conservative-synagogue Jews tend to be Republicans/Libertarians.

A second point is that the bulk of Jews who emigrated to America in the early 20th century were already socialists, and they came here to escape persecution from culturally-conservative totalitarians, which is how conservatives are often perceived today by non-conservatives--so being an American Jew and supporting Ted Cruz is thought of as the 21st century equivalent of being a Ukrainian Jew and supporting the Tsar a hundred years ago.

Finally, there is one aspect of the American Jewish experience that is unique. For Gentile ancestors, America was the "promised land" to which they came, and which was their destination, but American Jews have a "promised land," Israel, and those with the future-looking, religiously motivated, entrepreneurial spirit become Israelis, leaving behind what becomes a greater percentage of American Jews being more European-socialist, meaning Democrats.

A strain of antipathy towards Christianity runs deep through the Jewish community. A love of socialism also runs deep through the Jewish community. Thus they will not align themselves with a party that is seen as pro-Christian and anti-socialist.

The net effect of all these movements (women's rights, black rights, gay rights, etc) is to divide the country into innumerable little factions.

Could it be that this is the objective? That they feel more comfortable as a little group in a country of little groups, then as a little group in a country which is unified, but where the dominant group is not one they feel like they can align with?

If they were not persecuted, they would no longer be Jews.

Think about it. The worst enemy of Judaism is assimilation, becoming so accepted that intermarriage causes the Jews to disappear as a distinct people (as is happening now in the US, with the intermarriage rate among non-Orthodox Jews being 71 percent, 58% overall).

Somebody who wanted Jews to persist as a distinct people would work hard to increase hostility and exclusion from the surrounding population.

I was raised Catholic, and both my parents were diehard Democrats for whom FDR was a deity. After I turned conservative I used to joke at them that they thought he was still living. They both firmly believed that the Dem Party was the "party that cared" and the those nasty Republicans were just for the rich people. They so ingrained these ideas in their children that I was really puzzled by one of my neighbors who had a Goldwater for president sticker on his car but who appeared to be one of the nicest guys around. How could that be? I thought all Republicans were evil, nasty persons who wanted to kill poor people?

That's how insidious the anti-Republican bias was in those days. People who think modern Republicans are depicted as evil ogres should have seen how Goldwater was characterized. There's basically little or no difference. The media and culture were almost as anti-conservative back then as they are now.

Excellent point but go convince, secular, assimilated Jews that Israel, their Promised Land is indeed waiting for them.
No, for the vast majority of Jews in America, America IS THE Promised Land. Israel is not REALLY seen as their homeland, America is.

Fact, Israel was created in 1948, America's Jews voted with their feet to stay put in America. Fact, less than 25% of American Jews ever visited Israel! After 65 years, the Jews still prefer to go to Cancun, Bahamas or China before setting foot in Israel! They are alienated from Israel or scared to feel a connection to her.

The Jews of America will gladly contribute money to send Russians or Ethiopian Jews straight to Israel but that's where it stops. Unfortunately Israel is seen by American Jewry as it was framed in 1947-48, a place for unfortunate souls who have no choice, the wretched refugee remnants of WWII. Not for me, for some other poor SOB.
The truth is, is that Israel is an amazingly advanced, Democratic, Western a open society where the mortality rate is lower than in the USA. Israel is a young and dynamic entrepreneurial society moving at light speed ahead and this, despite the wars, terror and financial blackmailing by the Arab boycotts!
BTW, Israel WAS European Socialist under Ben Gurion and thank G-d, they dropped that ideology with the rise of the Likud party PM, Menachem Begin in 1977. Now they are a fully fledged market-driven economy leaving the Arabs in the dust.

American Democratic Jews do not really understand Israeli Republican Jews because each side's reality is very different. They are brothers but the Israelis are firmly planted on the ground and have no time for whimsical Left wing BS even though many of the elites there were copying the American Jewish approach to conflict resolution. That was called the “Oslo Peace Process” - what a bitter lesson that was.

Now American Jewry is more concerned with Trans-gender Homo rights while their Israeli brethren have to contend with being annihilated by Iran and an American President Man-child who won't be there for them...

What a world of difference!!

There is no Jewish overall plan to divide Americans into groups.
The opposite.

In RAT’S eyes, a Republican is a cigar-chomping, unfeeling, cold-hearted, Capitalist exploiter (with a black top hat) of the “common man” who’s octopus tentacles are connected to the Trusts and the Military Industrial Complex.

This is a very strong image to alter in the minds of the public. Of course we have to have a healthy skepticism about the role of government but Republicans are ALWAYS portrayed in this light.

Vietnam only solidified this image and today’s boomers still carry the bitter taste of Republicans filtered through CBS’ Walter Conkrite (and I loved the guy).

How EVIL MacNamara, Nixon, Kissinger, Westmorland, Ford, the Bush’s, Palin and Romney and ANY Republican can be.

In short, Republicans are greedy warmongers while DemocRATS are for the common man. It doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon.

“Traditional” Judaism does not have a “pulpit”, nor does it have a “sermon”. These are not Jewish terms. Of course they can be used but it just goes to show you where the Reformed mindset is. Even a “Confirmation” ceremony held in many Reformed synagogues is a Christian term...add the organ and viola! You have a church replete with those flowing Baptist gowns! :-)

It’s OK, I was raised Reformed too...

As recently as the 1950s, there were quotas at major universities that restricted the admission of Jews - my own family dentist had to go to another country to learn dentistry - there were many areas where they couldn’t by homes, and major companies that wouldn’t hire Jews. Add to that hotels that wouldn’t accept them as guests and country clubs they could not join.
All of this was perceived as the action and mindset of a Protestant Republican establishment. The Dems positioned themselves as welcoming immigrants and being for the underdog.
