"Do the Republican and Democratic parties do an adequate job of representing the American people, or do they do such a poor job that a third major party is required?"
A record 60% of Americans now yearn for a third major party, according to Gallup. Independents, unsurprisingly, are most likely to favor a third party, but a majority of self-described Republicans say yes, too. But what do they mean by that "yes"?
(snip) But here's a caution about third parties in American history: They are much more likely to arise on the fringes of the political system, not the center. ......
(snip) Pragmatists want to change the GOP so that it can win elections and govern effectively. Tea party Republicans prefer to express their principles regardless of consequences, which is why the Pew survey in September found that 71% of them favored a government shutdown even though nearly 40% of them expected that shutdown to have a "major" impact on the economy. .....

Hey David, the Tea Party splitting from you moderates would be a blessing for us, the end of the GOP as a viable political party, and it gives an opportunity for a new political movement to expand freely and openly with the American people.
PS (To Mr. Frum) Tea Party will add to its ranks in November 2014. We are not going away.
Yep.
That's exactly what happened in Canada- the Progressive Conservative party split and a new party took over the conservative movement. The downside is that the process took 15 years in opposition.
That’s the way the GOPe likes it....All the perks, none of the responsibility.
David Frump who?
A Tea Party exit is a DEATH SENTENCE for the GOP.

As Rush Limbaugh says, the Left always tells you what they fear. The “Tea Party” portion of the Republican party is rapidly growing and with the 2014 election they may well have the numbers to take control/leadership of the Republicans in the House of Representatives. That, combined with a Republican majority (buttressed by more newly elected conservative Republican Senators) in the Senate after the 2014 election, is giving the ruling elite nightmares. And they are doing everything possible to prevent this from happening. Folks, let’s not help them. We are rapidly approaching the time when we reclaim the Republican party. Don’t let the progressives distract you from working toward this goal.

IMHO you are doing the work of the progressive Democrats, whether you know it or not.
The Tea Party has a remedy, the GOP and the Rats want to keep digging.
Lord Haw Haw speaketh.
Nothing a second Reagan Revolution couldn’t cure. Keep the party, kick to the curb those who are RINOs and Dem sympathizers. “Bold colors, no pastels!”
Onward to victory!
Why? So the GOP can capitulate to obama’s every whim? Why have two parties? Obama is down to 37% approval right now. Why should we give him what he wants and be a part of the destruction of our healthcare system and peoples’ personal finances? Frum is such a loser
And life as a permanent minority party would be just peachy for Frum and the GOP. The Tea Party might not enjoy the liberation of becoming another minor, third party. The better course of action is for the GOP to become the party of the Tea Party and Ted Cruz in the same way it was once the party of Lincoln.
David, David, David - - - - .
The TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY citizens are the former SILENT MAJORITY citizens in terms of core values, attitudes, and lack of tolerance for “Leftstream” Media proponents like you.
a.k.a. David Frum d' Rear.
Tea Party goes, and the GOP dies with it.
Mr. Frum doing his best to encourage the GOP to become a dying, shrinking, irrelevant fringe party.
