I Want to Be Friends With Republicans
The New York Times ^ | November 2, 2013 | David James Poissant

Posted on 11/02/2013 1:48:12 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The trouble started the night Jeff, one of the guys I drink and talk about God with, announced that he’d been summoned to court for the Zimmerman trial jury pool. We’d kept politics out of our Wednesday night meetings, which are held on my back porch, the six of us seated at an old dining room table propped next to my broken hot tub (Florida short-sale homes come standard with broken hot tubs). Instead of Bible Study, we call it our Tavern Ministry, and while we were often drunk halfway through, a churchlike decorum had always held sway. Once the case came up, though, decorum collapsed.

I wanted George Zimmerman behind bars. With Sanford, the town where he killed Trayvon Martin, just a short drive from my home, I wanted to know that I’d never run into him with my daughters at the grocery store or on a late-night walk around my neighborhood.

But Jeff wasn’t so sure that Zimmerman was guilty. Another friend agreed. It was complicated, he said. He didn’t get why so many lefties thought the shooting had something to do with race.

“Let’s not go there,” I said. My wife, Marla, had warned me that some of the guys were conservative. But I liked who they were on Wednesdays, and I didn’t want politics to change that. Still, Jeff kept on, others chimed in and finally I said, “O.K., let’s go there.”

We’d been meeting for a few weeks. We’d come together the way men in suburbia often come together, which is to say that our wives are friends....

“libs always mean the opposite.

his version of ‘friends’ is holding the pistol to the back of a conservative over the trench of dead conservatives.”

THIS. THIS RIGHT HERE ! That is the way we should be viewing these vermin.

You sir, are totally correct. And I think it’s about time we all sat down and started to see your way of thinking. Your tagline is also pretty damned good too.

A toast to you !

I only read the excerpt, but my impression is that the author is a typical lib: he wants to be “freinds” with Repubs, but only those that agree with him (RINOs....); he wants to be able to tell his other liberal friends that he’s convinced Repubs of the errors of their ways.

I’ll ask this guy just one question: “Mr. Piss-ant, how are you on partial birth abortion?” What do you guess that he’s all for it?

Some years ago I was at a party and some nerdy young guy, college age kid announced rather seriously that he was a''follower of Marx'' ''Marx, huh? I said. He looked at me with sort of an expectant look as if this announcement of his had impressed me. I said, ''Which one, Karl or Groucho? Everyone around us laughed at that except the kid. That's another thing about Libs, they're basically humorless.

Does the story not show at the link because I am not paying the NYT? I wanted to read it.

The strongest proof at how screwed up is this country is the fact that while virtually every adult knows who Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are, probably less than 5% of the public knows who Thomas Sowell is.

I work in downtown Chicago, but I live in a relatively conservative county just due west. So, I work with a bunch of Obamaphiles (though there are some who are on the opposite pole, like me, so it is not a total hostile environment). Thus, I associate with some lefties at work, and I work with them to get our job done. But I have no social contact with them at all outside of work; hell, I have no type of contact with them outside of work. And I intend to keep it that way, because, as another poster said, they are wholly untrustworthy, besides being the most shallow people I have ever known.

Unless a leftist is a naive kid, and some of them are, I tend to assume that they are “defective units” in some way.

Deeply troubled, neurotic, and filled with the hatred that those in pain sometimes have—who think that if they can just *hurt* someone else, it will lessen their own pain.

Quite a litany of neuroses. Crushing feelings of inadequacy masked by airs of superiority. They often feel incompetent, inferior, oppressed and victimized by something nebulous, but they also are caught in some deep fantasy that “something” can happen that will magically make everything better. Everything and all at once.

This magic will require no thought, action or work on their part, but will be given to them if they just follow the right leader, their messiah.

It is very hard to be friends with that, because the most they can rate the value of that friendship is so low on the scale of what they crave, that you might as well be a sock puppet.

True friendship is out of their league until they clear all those spiders out of their closet. If they can. Most can’t.

Agree. By ‘friends’, in my experience, leftists mean someone with an opposing view they have the beneficence to tolerate as long as the ‘friend’ never brings it up and routinely apologizes and otherwise shows deference for differing from the twisted, dystopic vision that is the leftist norm.

I somehow don’t think anyone who could admire Franco would like Obama. Whatever Franco was, he was anti-communist so that should keep The Won off his Christmas Card list.

Note to Liberals, you don’t hire Politicians to steal from your Friends, or your Enemies. This is America.

I can’t believe I read the whole thing. The author worships at the Peggy Noonan church of affected grace. He really wants to celebrate how clever he is to have put Neanderthal conservatives into a little box that he can feel sympathy for — they have imbibed harsh rhetoric you see, not worty of rational analysis. He’s also a real martyr; he’d rather associate with his SUPERSMART LEFTIST FRIENDS, but here he is, feeling sorry for stupid Republican trash his wifey forced him to associate with. What greatness of character. I’ll give his credit for subterfuge in ad homonym attacks. Pull the silver handle.

To: OldNewYork; All

what to do when all your
immediate family members
(siblings, inlaws, neices and
nephews) are leftists?

i know i cannot influence
their thinking (the middle-aged
and older generation have all been
persuaded by their young
adult “kids”).

i am at a crossroads-—politely,
but honestly, beg off any further
get-togethers? Or-—?
