Skip to comments.Krugman: Those counting on Obamacare collapse are “making a very bad bet”

Writing at his New York Times blog, Paul Krugman warned that those banking on Obamacare to collapse are probably making a very bad bet.
As proof, Krugman points to the record of state-level healthcare exchanges, which by and large have been performing much better than their federal counterpart. He also cites the rising levels of Medicaid enrollment which is occurring in both states that have and havent accepted the Obamacare expansion and the slow improvement of Healthcare.gov as reasons for optimism. All in all, Krugman says, the law is probably going to stumble through to the finish line.
More from Krugman at the New York Times:
If all this is right, by the time open enrollment ends in March, millions of previously uninsured Americans will in fact have received coverage under the law, and reform will be irreversible. Obama personally may never recover his reputation; Democratic hopes of a wave election in 2014 are probably gone, although you never know. But anyone counting on Obamacare to collapse is probably making a very bad bet.
“Enron’s doing just fine”
It’s too early to tell.
We need to remember that a lot of folks are going to prosper from this (medicaid, waivers, subsidies).
Right now we’re only hearing the negatives.
Don’t underestimate the Chicago mob.
Killing a Zombie is an active exercise.
I’m afraid I have to agree with him. When was the last time the guvmint took down one of their own programs? Prohibition? It’s just not going to happen.
Here in CA I hear they have all the free loaders signing on quickly and everyone else is staying home.
Yes!!!! This is the confirmation we have been waiting for. Implosion on the way.
No, I’m expecting Obamacare to finish off the U.S. economy when cash-strapped people who might be lucky to be working in this lousy O economy are cut from 40 hours to 28 hours and face illnesses with higher deductibles for less coverage for more money.
Chew on that one, Krugman.
Wave bye-bye to the Dems.
I wonder if Paul’s going to want to change his bet when hundreds (maybe thousands) of extremely ill people who had their insurance cancelled by obamacare regulations and were unable to obtain and/or afford a new obamacare policy start to DIE after January 1, 2014 because they can no longer obtain health care. Obama and the Democrats are going to have blood on their hands if they persist in trying to implement their totally unworkable legislation.
Krugman’s been so right about its phenomincal success so far!
He can blame it on an alien invasion.
BTW govt needs more money to ward of the alien attack.
“He also cites the rising levels of Medicaid enrollment . . .”
So the big success that will prevent collapse is people signing up for free stuff? ZeroCare was a fiscal disaster BEFORE we learned that only old, sick people would sign up for the exchanges and that free Medicaid would have an overwhelmingly positive response.
The longer it stays, the more damage it is going to do.
The statewide exchanges may be working like like a fine Swiss watch, but this has nothing to do with the overall notion that whatever plans they are selling must conform to ACA guidelines which means: That for young people generally not needing much in the way of healthcare, their costs are going to explode. Additionally, vast numbers of apparent statewide signups are going to be dumped into Medicare or in the case of CA, Medicaid. Great numbers of docs aren’t going to accept the miserable level of compensation offered by either of these plans (witness so many docs not accepting m-care patients as-is)...and you have a recipe for a rapid and venal deterioration of the general level of healthcare but with rapidly escalating costs from the dumping of literally millions of patients into Medicare. So things might get a tad better over the near term in terms of not hearing about the disaster of the day from 0care et al; but the system will just go bust that much sooner.
But of course, one would have to have a brain and ponder things a bit or listen to people who have industry experience to reach such a conclusion instead of parroting utopian slogans.
It’s interesting that he uses the word “probably”.
The good news is that every one will health care. The bad news is it will be terrible health care along the lines of British or Canadian care. I just went on Medicare so somewhat protected from the cost escalations. But I’m already finding that some doctors won’t take Medicare. May soon be between the proverbial rock and a hard place.
The whole scam is designed to collapse into NHS, administered by the corrupt US Gov’t. The horror stories from the UK and Canada are nothing compared to where we’ll be in 3yrs, after 0traitor finishes this part of the marxist agenda.
This is what the US has ahead of it.
“Wrong way” Krugman is never right.
The only people signing up for it now, if they can get through the clunky website, are people are in the high risk population who are probably the only ones who would benefit from Obamacare. The people they need to fund the system, young and/or otherwise healthy people, are not signing up. This does not even take into consideration all the millions of people who are receiving insurance cancellations or those who will have to pay much higher premiums to make up for the influx of high risk people into the system. Many, many more losers than winners right now. I think that the system will become so unpopular, that politicians will be pressured to change it radically or scrap it completely.
Ubamacare is the death panel for the United States of America.
What exactly do you think "fundamental change" means?
If the people they need to pay for it do not sign up, they are in trouble. They depend on this mandate to force people to sign up. If people do not, this thing goes away.
Fundamental change can go both ways, unless you give up.
I’m a senior citizen, I have no choice but to bet my life on it!!!
Sadly, I think he is right.
Sadly, I think he is right.
You must still be employed at the federal government’s Works Progress Administration...
Krugman has never been right. He’s Mr. Anti-Reality.
Appologize for being a defeatist. Obamacare will prevail if people like me who always hated it just roll over. I feel like the next couple months maybe the only chance we have to destroy it. I want the outrage to keep growing, as each layer is peeled.
More Delusion in the libtards projections.
Those betting on the collapse of American health-care are making a very good bet. 100% guaranteed.
As in months for MRIs, hip replacements CABGs, etc.
They don't have the concept of what efficient, top-of the line care even is, so they are "secure" in their just enough-care, that even the lowliest Medicaid recipient in the US would NEVER tolerate.
In fact Medicaid patients are the MOST demanding patients.
What? I have to wait an HOUR for the doctor? I'm not seeing any PA or Nurse Practitioner, I want an MD!
I want a prescription written for Tylenol, so I get it for free!
(Actual conversations in my office).
I admire your patience in the face of all that!
Could a weasel say it better?
They dropped the asset tests so even rich folks with low adjusted income can get it. About 1.5 million in CA will now be eligible for Medi-Cal.
I hope that the state exchanges do well. That is where this type of service belongs, not with the Federal Government.
Sorry but a full 2/3 of folks who currently have insurance will see their existing policies cancelled, if you think that’s a win for the dems, your are smoking some good stuff.
Remember they gave businesses another year, which means the only reason the cancellatons are in the single digit millions and not close to 100 Million are because of that... Those notices will go out next October.
Between now and then folks will continue to lose their doctors and the epic fails will continue to be reported daily.
Not sure how badly this will hurt the dems but they are going to be crushed, and they know it.
Under Obamacare a family of 4 making 95,000 a year can still get subsidies.. its a fiscal disaster folks... EVEN IF IT WERE TO WORK EXACTLY AS DESIGNED.
Obamacare will fail because any kind of “success” would require repealing every law of economics and human nature known to man.
I sincerely hope you are correct.
In my flawed thinking world, I really believed no POTUS could be re-elected with 8% unemployment, $4 gas, surging food prices, and trillion dollar deficits.
I don’t think so, not at this point... Remember Democratic voters are not all hard core leftists, most are just low information voters. They vote democratic because their parents did and their parents before them.
Obama and the democrats have lied to them, they actually believed the lies and the press covered up the lies.. Now all that is gone. Obama is a liar to these people, nothing can put that back in the bottle.
Now a year is a long time in politics, so yes something could change, but right now we are going to have a year long story of how Obamacare is wrecking the health care system.
The bloom is off this rose, or more apropos the lipstick is off the pig. There is no way for Dems to backtrack on this, or for them to blame it on Republicans. They created, and forced this law into existence, they own it, and will pay a very high price for it.
The law will fail, it had no chance to succeed, because the MATH will never add up for it, never did. Wait until the BAILOUTS kick in and taxpayers find out the us government is going to spend 100’s of BILLIONS of dollars if not Trillions to bail out insurance companies because Obamacare created a fiscal mess.
Every Democrat up for re-election in the SENATE voted for this mess, every last one of them... Vast majority in the house did too... You think Obama cares if they get wiped out? Not really because like all things Obama its about him at the end of the day.
The problem with Medical is you may find CA collecting a debt from a bank account or your real estate. You are not safe on Medical unless you are destitute.
