I wasn’t old enough to vote. Didn’t pay too much attention to politics back then, but the MSM made him and Phyllis Schafley kinda looney.

When I got through school, and could vote, I started digging into stuff, and trying to understand and be well informed on issues. That’s when I began to have a real appreciation for those two people, and a firmer grasp on what was happening to our freedom.

That's true, but the Conservatives wanted a choice. Having basically had the conservative nomination previously “stolen” by dirty tricks, it was commonly predicted that the conservative wing would finally get a nominee, in 1964 - probably because the Rockefeller wing didn't figure they could win either.
