Palin speaking in Huntsville: Dem says it's 'absolutely appalling,' Repub says it's 'fantastic idea'

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - The views are as different as their political parties.

When it comes to Sarah Palin speaking in Huntsville next week at the New Hope High School graduation, Republicans love it and Democrats don't.

Palin, who ran for vice president on the John McCain ticket in 2008 and the former governor of Alaska, will speak at the Von Braun Center's Propst Arena on May 21.

AL.com reached out to the chairs of the Democratic and Republican parties in Madison County for their thoughts about Palin.

First, from Clete Wetli, chair of the Madison County Democrats:

"I really thought it was a terrible joke or a prank. I think it's absolutely appalling. Surely they could find somebody who would be less divisive and more inspirational for the students. Time and time again, she's really embarrassed herself and also embarrassed the country. I'm not sure what the reason would be they would ask someone like that to speak at a commencement ceremony. I thought it was a joke at first - a really bad joke.

"I thought it was a fake news story. That's the thing I don't understand. Why in the world would you do something like that when she has such a legacy of misquotes and gaffes and on and on and one. Why would the school want to embarrass itself having someone like that speak at the graduation ceremony. To that point, part of what we expect students to do is to follow through with things. She didn't even finish her term as governor and used her 15 minutes of fame to do nothing but enrich herself and carry on this ideological agenda. I think it's a horrible choice."

And from John Como, chair of the Madison County Republicans:

"I think it's a fantastic idea. Why shouldn't she? There is nothing wrong with a strong Republican, conservative woman coming to talk to high school students. The sooner that we get over the fact that there are strong Republican women who have a positive message for our young people - and that could be good politicians and good leaders in our country - the better off our country is going to be.

"I think it's fantastic. I wish I had thought of it myself.

"I'd love to have her come speak to the Madison County Republicans. Whichever one of the students who reached out to have her come needs to be patted on the back and applauded."

They forgot screechy voice. They are slipping.

So let me get this straight, when someone speaks at a high school graduation, they have to ask the Dem party what they think of it?? Who the hell cares what those cockroaches think

Amazing, from being a reformist Governor that was fighting both parties, while maintaining 85 and 93% approval from ALL the people, to now being called a “divider”.

If Sarah were a flaming liberal who approved of abortion, gay marriage, and redistribution of wealth the left would absolutely adore her

This is hilarious. Somebody could really make this Democrat lose his marbles by pulling his leg.

“A poll of students after she spoke found that after she spoke, some 70% of girls said they wish they could be like her, and 80% of boys said they hoped they could marry a woman like her.”

This is one thing they hate about her and her handsome husband, and her being a rare thing in national politics, perhaps a first, a self made woman.

When?

Well. There was that time she said she could see Russia from her house... and some of the other times when she embarrassed our country by being impersonated by Tina Fey on Saturday Night Live. And she has been called stupid on NPR quite a few times, that's pretty embarrassing for our country. (Sarcasm is hard to deliver without a disclaimer these days.)

Ping to Sarah's Awesome List!

Can't even speak at a School Graduation without someone's head exploding.

I remember I spoke at my High School Graduation in '06. I can't wait to hear what Sarah says.

Sarah WAS loved by the Democrats too. Because she stuck it to the GOP-E in Alaska.

Too Bad so many let ideology seep back through what She was and is trying to do for America.

That's the *tolerant* left, for you.

These kids don't know how blessed they are. The lessons of Sarah's heart will prove more worthy than most any other gift they'll ever receive.

If Sarah were liberal, she would be revered by the liberals and women’s groups as a combination of Joan of Arc, Annie Oakley, and Rosie the Riveter.

Here we have a woman, who rose in politics on her own, not due to who her husband was. She took on corruption in her own party. She challenged an incumbent governor of her own party to be elected governor. She delivered a budget surplus to her state. She reached a pinnacle in politics by becoming only the 2nd woman nominated for vice-president by a major political party. She truly has it all, as she has risen to the peak of her chosen profession, and has a wonderful marriage and family life. She is a woman who has it all, according to the women’s groups aspirations for women; that women don’t have to choose between career and family.

If a liberal woman politician had a life story such as Sarah, she would be perceived very differently by the liberals who set the criteria for judgement. Instead, she was denigrated for not being able to explain the Bush doctrine to Charlie Gibson, for not being able to tell Katic Couric what newspapers and magazines she reads, and poor word choice about how close Alaska is to Russia.

For the record, the closest part of Alaska to Russia is two miles across the Bering Strait. Big Diomede Island is Russian, and Little Diomede Island is Alaskan territory. These two islands are only two miles apart in the Bering Strait. For not being able to articulate this fact to the satisfaction of the liberals, liberals who didn’t even know that fact in the first place, she was labeled as ignorant of the geography of her own state. Unbelievable.
