Today, the Post published excerpts of Bowe Bergdahls journal, along with emails and other writings, giving us the most intimate, complex, and in many ways sad view weve yet had of the young man who had been held prisoner by the Taliban for five years.
What the journal ultimately shows suggests that as a partisan political issue, Bergdahls release is likely to fade before long. The right has gotten about as much as they can out of it, and now that we know how troubled Bergdahl was before he wandered off his base, they may just let it go.
The idea that Bergdahl wasnt sufficiently deserving of rescue has been central to the conservative criticism of the deal to obtain his release. Even as they wildly exaggerate the danger of the five former Taliban we released (to hear Fox News tell it, youd almost think the five not only planned and executed the September 11 attacks, they also have super-powers that will enable them to reduce our nation to ashes any day now), many on the right attacked Bergdahl and his family relentlessly, accusing him of being not just a deserter but an outright traitor. Some even mobilized a PR campaign to promote soldiers who would go in the media to criticize Bergdahl.
But his writings, which were shared with the Post by a close friend, tell a story that doesnt fit into the kind of box that can be easily used for partisan purposes. Among other things, we now know that Bergdahl joined the Coast Guard in 2006 and was quickly discharged for psychological reasons, though he claimed to friends that he had faked mental illness in order to get released...

Paul’s panties are being twisted into a knot from tet another of Obama’s f-ups. He wants the wolves called off. That will not be happening.
Sweep, sweep, sweep. Sweep it under the rug!
What? What are you talking about? It never happened!
Time for Paul To KMA!
We may have to let it go... to focus on Obama losing Iraq to Al Qaeda
No conservative objected to his repatriation.
They objected to the blatantly illegal way it was obtained.
Whether or not Bergdahl was fit for the laughing academy when he left post is immaterial.
The administration lied about his physical health.
The administration lied about his service.
The administration illegally failed to notify Congress.
The administration paid a ridiculously high price and tried to dodge the scrutiny that should have accompanied the move.
When our enemies tell us what to do or not to do, we should listen and do the opposite.
This message is aimed at our weak knee Rinos in DC.
Bergdahl is a distraction from Obama’s treason.
Obama has returned 5 top enemy commanders to the enemy which has not surrendered! A blatant overt act of aid to the enemy.

Yes, but go to the link, that’s not how they spell it. Someone asks me that almost every time...
Typical Alinsky tactic of ridiculing those who make legitimate cases against the left but - I will be saving this nugget for when these scumbags kill their first Americans and put it right back in his face
How does this affect criticism of the very bad decision Obama made? The White House did not know about this diary nor about his Coast Guard discharge. This information may or may not bear on the man’s fate, but it has nothing to do with the very bad decision Obama made.
You shouldn’t have to wait too long if my intuition is any good.
Sorry, the question wasn't intended for you -- it was rhetorical question intended for the author of the column.
I almost added to the original: "dumb leftist journalist can't even use a dictionary", but I thought it was redundant. :-)
The BIG issue here, and one that make Obama a prime candidate for ouster is the release of the five Taliban generals. This has clearly aided and abetted the enemy and and armed the enemy with a heightened threat to the lives and safety of Americans.

Time for right to let go of Bowe Bergdahl political controversy
The focus needs to stay squarely on Obama. Bergdahl can be dealt with (or not) in due time. It is Oabama who is the ongoing clear and present danger
So Bergdahl is also a liar, in addition to being a deserter and not worth trading five senior terrorists for - illegally. Is that the best case they can make for forgetting yet another bad Obama decision?
“wildly exaggerate the danger of the five former Taliban”
Well of course, five really nice guys that were just down on their luck.
Getting their GEDs, putting a rap group together, getting into rehab and starting families...
Considering some 55% of Americans say that whole issue was FUBAR from the start... hell no, we’re not letting it go.
I would like to see those on our side concentrate less, right now, on the actions of the deserter and much more on Obama’s act of treason in releasing the Bergdahl 5 without informing Congress. That is the most important part of the story, IMO.
“Getting their GEDs, putting a rap group together, getting into rehab and starting”
I’m not thinking “families”!
Getting back an American citizen is a top priority. But the price is significant. It is a simple matter of arithmetic. If one U.S. soldier dies as a consequence of Bergdahl’s release (assuming he is not a traitor) we are back to square one. Paul Waldman claims, “Bergdahls release is likely to fade before long.” That may be the case. However, (I do not have a crystal ball nor am I an expert on terrorism, but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn last night) the probability is that more than one U.S. soldier will pay for Bergdahls release with his life. Mullah Mohammad Fazl, former Taliban Deputy Defense Minister, is not a very nice person. He is extremely ambitious. His own mother reported that his goal in life was to get a head. Here you can see him posing with five of them. http://www.snopes.com/photos/politics/fazl.asp
Waldman is in the class of pundits with Fareed Zakaria. After the death of Osama bin Laden, Zakaria stated, “The truth is this is a huge, devastating blow to al Qaeda, which had already been crippled by the Arab Spring. It is not an exaggeration to say that this is the end of al Qaeda in any meaningful sense of the word.” A word of caution: if you planned on vacationing in Baghdad this summer you may want to reconsider.
Mubarak, Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein were not nice guys, nor were they genuinely pro-American, but they will be missed. Enjoy the Arab Spring. The leftist media will try to ignore the outcome of this exchange but if the consequences are severe enough they will be unable to suppress it.
What is Paul saying, that this soldiers mental health made him do it?
How many articles/column inches over how many months did WaPo dedicate to the far more important national security issue of “Macaca?”
Watch them try and turn him into a combination of Alvin York and Audie Murphy.
I hope if they do, it fails.
