The establishment wing of the Republican party Tuesday will mount a last-ditch effort to prevent the Tea Party from winning a major victory in a high-profile Senate race in Mississippi.
Thad Cochran, Mississippis long-serving 76-year-old senator, is fighting for his political life against Chris McDaniel, a Right-wing challenger backed by Sarah Palin.
With polls showing Cochran heading towards defeat, the Republican leadership has rushed money and reinforcements to Mississippi to try to stave off another win for the conservative grassroots.
John McCain, the former presidential candidate and one of the partys most recognizable faces, campaigned for Cochran yesterday in the final hours before voters head to the polls. Not only the eyes of the nation, the eyes of the world will be on this election tomorrow, he said at a rally in Jackson, the state capital.
The battle in the Deep South reflects a larger struggle between the more moderate Republican establishment and a Tea Party movement dedicated to a strict conservative agenda.
The Republican schism is illustrated by McCain and Palin, who were running mates against Barack Obama in 2008 but are now backing different sides in the Mississippi race....

Thanks, Captain Obvious!
McCain and Cochran. Two senile fools who need to retire
McCain and Palin were just the bestest of friends until this thing came along. [/s]
McCain and the schism between voters ...
Nope, there was no “schism” when liberals ran Joe Lieberman out of the party in 2006. No siree. See, see...that was different. Old Joe dared to just be a little moderate on the WOT, and got drummed out of the party.
Let’s seeeeee....McCain or Palin....McCain or Palin...such a tough choice. LOL!
McLame and Palin, polar opposites politically.
Sarah and McCain never were running mates. The GOP only put Sarah on the ticket so McCain wouldn’t be totally embarrassed and buried in a landslide.
No doubt—we want them both retired in the upright position and walking out the door. These old pol geezers think its their noble goal to exit stiff and horizontal. Enough of the Senate being an elite retirement/hospice center. Out with the old, in with the bold.
McCain has been working against Sarah Palin since before Election Day, 2008.
BUMP to your second point.
McCain picked Palin for ulterior motives. To support things and ideas that he ‘spouted’, but didn’t actually believe in. There you have it in a nutshell.
Does Cochran even know what day it is? How incredibly irresponsible of the GOPe to put him out there one more time.
Is Obama campaigning for Cochran too?
Pray America wakes up
McCain’s own party in Arizona gave him a no confidence vote.. Why is he still here?
“Does Cochran even know what day it is? How incredibly irresponsible of the GOPe to put him out there one more time.”
He could be a corpse as long as he votes the way the RINOs tell him to in DC is all that matters.
What other party does that remind you of?
I can’t get over Bill Clinton supposedly telling Hillary to use his death to get a couple of million more votes.
Politics has become the playground of amoral power-monger conscienceless sharks. And that goes for both sides but I still think the rats are way worse - and way better at this “game”. The losers are us including those too stupid to realize it
The Tea Party already WON THIS. If the only way that the Establishment can win is buy walking around LaHood offering money to gangstas to vote for them, then they have LOST.
