Tomasky: You Lost One, Tea Party. Deal With It.
Yahoo! News / The Daily Beast ^ | June 27, 2014 | Michael Tomasky

Posted on 06/27/2014 8:32:14 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

As I watched conservatives seethe Wednesday, and Chris McDaniel (so devoted to describing his martyrdom that I think he’s a day or two away from nailing himself to a cross) boil, I came to feel—to a certain point—sympathy. If the situation were reversed, I thought, and a sellout Democrat had defeated a more progressive opponent on the strength of votes from Republicans, I have to confess I wouldn’t like it a bit.

And just as I thought about that, I remembered: Wait. This happened. And it was kind of similar. But it was also quite dissimilar, in ways that are telling about how far divorced from reality these Tea Party people are.

I refer the 2006 battle between Joe Lieberman and Ned Lamont. Let’s recall the facts of the case.

Lieberman was the incumbent Democratic senator from Connecticut. Beloved by Democrats, mostly, in 2000 as their history-making Jewish veep candidate, Lieberman quickly slithered into swamps from which he could be neither rescued nor redeemed. He backed the Iraq War, of course. But a lot of high-level Democrats did that. Holy Joe backed it and backed it and backed it and backed it. Op-eds in The Wall Street Journal, ever more frequent appearances on Fox News—that kind of thing....

Lieberman backed the long term candidate for a liberal takeover: McCain.

Cochran never had a brilliant long term plan for a conservative takeover.

the guy’s an ahole but his point isn’t totally wrong. If there was any doubt that the GOP-e will work against Conservative candidates, the Mississippi thing should have erased it forever. We may not like the price of the lesson but it’s a valuable one.

That said, we lost. No one is going to come along and say “Upon further review...” Learn and move on to the next battle.

Mikey,
We are dealing with it. Some are already working hard to reelect Cochran. Some are even working hard to have Chris McDaniel run as a write-in candidate. Some are now working hard to elect Travis Childers. And some are working very hard to destroy the Republican Party once and for all.
See Mikey, we are all dealing with the betrayal of the Conservative Tea Party by the old guard of the Republican party, each in our own way. Thank you very much for your concern.

I kind of get what he is saying. The Lamont/Lieberman battle is most comparable to the Miller/Murkowski battle in Alaska.

I admit it, I was for Lieberman and against Murkowski.

BUT, neither of these are comparable to the mudslinging that was done by Cochran in the MS race. Did Joe Lieberman say Ned Lamont was a Nazi, or vice versa? Did Joe Miller say Lisa Murkowski was a racist, or vice versa?

Did any of these candidates say that their opponent’s supporters were racists who were going to prevent people from voting? Did any of them accuse anyone of being in the KKK?

The MSM needs to stop covering up for Barbour and Cochran.

And yes, I get that some scurrilous things have been said about candidates throughout American history, but when did it become acceptable to slander your own party’s voters?

If ANY republican votes for Cochran in the general election, a pox be upon them. Let him do what the GOP-E dreams of, let him get ALL his votes from the other side. Perhaps he can enroll some newly arrived Guatemalan toddlers to vote for him.

Those are all the votes he should get.

Hey, you know, if it puts him over the top, I’ll congratulate him.

Minor difference — Leiberman didn’t win the democratic primary by having republicans cross over.

He won a GENERAL ELECTION by convincing the voters of his state that he was preferable to the democrat. He did so well that republicans decided to vote for him rather than the republican.

In Miss., the problem was the GOP itself asking democrats to vote in the GOP primary.

If Cochran wanted to appeal to democrats to beat a conservative running on the libertarian party ticket in a general election, I’d hope he’d lose, but it wouldn’t be a betrayal, because in a general election you are supposed to try to get everybody to vote for you.

And in fact, if McDaniels decided to run a 3rd-party candidacy, I would fully expect Cochran to try to get those same democrats to vote for him instead of the democrat. to counter the votes he would lose on the right.

Sadly, he would probably offer promises he would keep to vote for something they wanted, like the voting rights act.

When Democrats and their subservient comrades of the Republican left get to whining about candidates who challenge them, they are afraid. They know voters who voted in the Democrat primary crossed to vote for Thad, and they are afraid McDaniel might yet win.
