The government is powerful and acting in a single direction. The opposition is weak and clueless.
Look at Germany 1932-1938. The popularity of the regime increased every year. It may in fact have continued to increase until 1943 (impossible to know). It took the burning of Hamburg and the total loss of the Sixth Army to wake people (people like us) up to the fact that he strong horse had run out of magic tricks.
