"Rand Paul is right," Rev. Al Sharpton said on MSNBC's Morning Joe on Friday after the Kentucky Senator empathized with African-Americans who believe their rights were threatened by police officers.

Paul published a TIME op-ed on Thursday discussing the issue of the "militarization" of the police force and what it meant in the showdown between police officers and protestors in Ferguson, Missouri reacting to the shooting death of Michael Brown.

"Given the racial disparities in our criminal justice system, it is impossible for African-Americans not to feel like their government is particularly targeting them," Paul wrote, after criticizing the racial disparity of the criminal justice system and the militarization of the police force.

Sharpton agreed with Paul's assertion, pointing out that the militarization was only one part of the problem....

Harry J Anslinger pretty much made it the basis for drug prohibition.

There’s a cure for blacks feeling “targeted” by whites. but I somehow doubt they’d jump on it if I suggested it.

If Rand really said those words, and it sure looks like he did, he’s a clueless dolt. There are racial disparities in sentencing because blacks on average commit far more crime than other groups. Paul chose to pander which should eliminate him as a serious Pubbie candidate. Oh, for a Pubbie candidate who would tell it like it is. Where are you Barry Goldwater?

When will Rand Paul unveil the shiny new D behind his name?

Rand Paul further deflated by his comments and Sharpton’s comments supporting him. Bye, Rand.

I wish that Rand Paul had the stones to say to Sharpton,

“Get away from me, you no-good racebaiting JERK!!”

Doesn’t Mr. Inclusive even realize that Sharpton’s `endorsement’ complete with video will be used by his primary opponents in 2016?

Unless they’re afraid of Sharpton, too.

The local police will remain loyal to however pays their salaries, their retirement benefits, and their lifetime healthcare. That would be big government. This has been true since the days of Sulla.

We are the largest, best equipped army that has ever existed on this planet. Right now, today.

We most certainly will not be if the militarization of the local, county and state police continues.

Paul is one of those clueless pols who firmly believe that if he just says the right things and snuggles up to the right race-baiters, he'll get a slew of black votes. In reality, he won't get any...especially with a libertarian platform.

95% of all black voters look at any candidate, black or white, and ask them "what are you going to give me?" And if the answer is something like giving them the opportunity to stand on their own two feet, that candidate will not get a black vote.

Rand Paul's immigration speech
...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.

Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.

Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.

Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.

If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...

This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.

Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.

Rand Paul calls on conservatives to embrace immigration reform
Latinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but "Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration." ...he would create a bipartisan panel to determine how many visas should be granted for workers already in the United States and those who might follow... [and the buried lead] "Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers...

I doubt anyone is slavishly devoted to Rand Paul, since those that agree with him on many things would never slavishly follow any politician.

Slavish devotion is exclusively the realm of the Palin cult.

The militarization of the police is not necessarily a bad thing. It provides a somewhat more capable armed counter to any attempt at a national dictatorship. Local police forces will be the core of any militia that rises against a would-be Fidel Castro in White House.

Far fetched and wrong.

The equipment and tactics they use are part and parcel of Washington big government. Homeland security is subsidizing this madness, and could easily cut off the hose should a national dictatorship arise.

It is a bad thing on all levels. There are differences between police officers and soldiers in any truly free society. Dictatorships are where their roles are indistinguishable.

Truly surprised to see this point of view of FreeRepublic. Scary.

Militarization of police has nothing to do with this robber getting shot and killed.

Two separate issues are being conflated.

I agree. I'm more concerned with the response to the protests.

It is a preview for how the FedGov will direct localities to respond to "anti-government" activists and Tea Party rallies. I'll bet seeing riot police in suburban Missouri are giving Obama wet dreams.
