Why a leading tea party group just slammed Mike Huckabee

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's (R) announcement Saturday that he is leaving Fox News as he considers running for president again has regnited an old feud between himself and the conservative Club for Growth -- a spat that dates back nearly a decade.

“In a year in which GOP voters appear likely to have several good pro-economic growth candidates to choose from, Mike Huckabee’s big government record would stand out from the crowd, and not in a good way," said Club for Growth president David McIntosh in a statement Monday.

Huckabee, a strong retail campaigner with a loyal evangelical Christian following, first gained national prominence in 2008 after winning the Iowa caucuses during the GOP presidential primary. Although he ultimately lost the nomination to Arizona Sen. John McCain, his weekend TV show on Fox News has expanded his national profile dramatically, if he chooses to run again. (His large name-recognition and support among conservative populists may help him overcome the sorts of fundraising obstacles that plagued his 2008 campaign.)

But, despite those strengths and shared populist sensibilities, the Club for Growth has already staked out a firm position against him and vows to continue pressing him on his conservative bona fides if he formally enters the race....

I heard that this was a plan to take out Bush. The more that run, more likely Bush will bud out.

The other way around, actually. The more “conservatives” run, the easier it’d be for Jebbie. You don’t leave a comfortable, good-paying TV gig unless someone offers you more money.

Club for Growth PAC Statement on Potential Huckabee Run For President

Barney Keller - January 05th, 2015

Club for Growth President David McIntosh: “In a year in which GOP voters appear likely to have several good pro-economic growth candidates to choose from, Mike Huckabee’s big government record would stand out from the crowd, and not in a good way.”

Washington, DC – The Club for Growth PAC issued the following statement in response to reports that former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee may run for President of the United States:

“As Mike Huckabee weighs the pros and cons of a second presidential candidacy, he should know that the Club for Growth PAC will make sure that Republican primary voters thoroughly examine his exceptionally poor record of raising taxes and spending as governor,” said Club for Growth President David McIntosh. “In a year in which GOP voters appear likely to have several good pro-economic growth candidates to choose from, Mike Huckabee’s big government record would stand out from the crowd, and not in a good way.”

In the past, the Club for Growth has published a series of detailed “white papers” on the economic records of the major candidates for President and intends to do so again in 2016. In 2008, the Club’s paper on Mike Huckabee’s recordas Governor of Arkansas found, among other things that:

In 2008, a political arm of the Club ran TV advertisements discussing Mike Huckabee’s record as well:

Old enemies:

Mike Huckabee has referred to the Club for Growth as the ‘Club for Greed’. He said regarding the organization’s credibility:

“You have to understand that the ‘Club for Greed’, as I like to call it, is really not being an objective organization. You give them money and they will say whatever you want them to say. [It’s] a pass-through so that people who don’t have the guts to run for office can write a big check and hide behind the trees, and let the Club for Greed go do its dirty work for them...Its been discredited [by] a lot of objective organizations”

The Club For Growth is not a Tea Party Group. The CFG predates the TP by years. This is a tempest in a teapot - an attempt to create to create divisiveness among two distinct Conservative Groups.

i think that Bush will have something to worry about when Cruz and Walker jump into the race. No way he will poll better than either one of them (well, maybe in blue states).

Wayne DuMond is Mike Huckabee’s Willie Horton. Once the case is again publicized, Huckabee will be toast. The Democrats know this and the MSM and Democrats want Huckabee to run. If he does and gets close to the end, it will be a bloodbath.

I tend to agree.

Sincere question, to all. Who is the most electable, in the GOP field? Respectfully, not your favorite, but the one most able to prevail, in 2016. Thank you, in advance.

That is EXACTLY correct. Cram the field with pretend self-declared Conservatives to make a path for the Establishment’s choice.

Except I am cynical enough to think that it matters not who runs or whom we vote for anymore, because the Imperial Fascist Oligarchy is self-aware and no longer concerned about the people discovering how corrupted the electoral system is. Last month’s CRomnibus and the disdain displayed by the GOP towards us, solidified that for me.

Methinks what happens now is all about continuing an illusion while consolidation goes on right in front of our faces.

Right. Club for Growth is not at all Tea Party. Is this a WaPo hit piece on Club by linking it to (horrors!) Tea Party? Or is the commentator just that dumb?

I never liked Club for Growth anyway. Tootles. Now I will never listen to another world they have to say. They’re just another group of lying thugs out to deprive the process of its oxygen and voters of their freedom to choose and participate.
