Donald Trump vowed to spend as much as $1 billion to defeat Hillary Clinton as he brought his unique brand of pandemonium to Des Moines.

For the 45 minutes it took him to walk from Gate 8 to the Iowa Pork Tent, onlookers stood agape, corndogs in one hand and smartphones in the other, shouting, pleading for a handshake, taking it in.

“We love you Donald.”

“Give ‘em hell!”

“Kick Hillary’s ass!”

Did the crowd energy for Reagan begin in August 1979? The most I remember is scenes from the GOP convention.

For a man age 69, he is jetting all over the country. That will wear out a 40 year old. Not much sleep, and jet lag is tough on seniors.

I do not remember enthusiasm for Reagan being that great in 1979. At that point, George Bush was the favored choice of the establishment GOP.

Reagan actually lost the Iowa caucus to George Bush and it appeared that he might be finished. But then he had the "I paid for this microphone" moment in NH and the tide started to turn.

However, as you point out, the magic moment for Reagan was the 1980 convention. Probably the greatest convention speech of the modern era. Even to this day, I watch it on YouTube from time to time. From that point on, Reagan was unstoppable.

Trump is way ahead of Reagan in this regard.
