Trump says immigration deal with Democrats close, with border security

President Donald Trump said on Thursday he was close to a deal with Democratic congressional leaders on protections for illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children, a development that alarmed some of his conservative supporters.

Trump, who met with the top Democrats in the Senate and House of Representatives, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, at the White House on Wednesday evening, said any final agreement must include significant measures to protect border security.

The Republican president added that funding for his planned wall along the U.S.-Mexican border - a centerpiece of his 2016 presidential campaign - would "come later" and would not be part of any final deal on the fate of the 800,000 so-called Dreamers. But, speaking to reporters, he said Democrats "cannot obstruct the wall."

"We have to have an understanding that whether it's in the budget or some other vehicle in a very short period of time, the wall will be funded. Otherwise, we're not doing anything," Trump said as he landed in Florida to survey hurricane damage.....

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m trying to scale back my personal and emotional investment in this country and learn to only care about myself and those like me. More and more I’m starting to regard my country less with a source of pride and more like an apartment rental: just somewhere to stay until something better comes along. However, unlike apartments, most of the world is an utter craphole, so I’m not optimistic that something better will come to pass.

I still love all the history of this country and the constitutional patriots still here, but Trump’s victory notwithstanding, one cannot deny the US’s third world status trajectory. If you step back and look at where we are now compared to 20 years ago, with the fanatical Marxist left corrupting everything from the NFL to public bathrooms, I hardly recognize it anymore. I just don’t see a course correction because there are enough lunatics in this country to prevent it from happening. The political class is too corrupt and entrenched for one man to try and fix it. Even he too appears to be faltering in the things within his control.

Certainly, I’m not trying to drive traffic away from FR, but I’d recommend that you close all your social media accounts - or at least greatly scale back your use if you still have them - and focus less on politics and more on yourselves and your family. I’ve been getting back in shape, trying to tune out all the noise while occasionally checking in here and over at Ace’s place, and I’ve felt much better for it. That doesn’t mean don’t continue to fight the commies as necessary, but just don’t let them dominate your life and your thoughts like they would love to do.

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms - to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

Close but no deal. Just my opinion, but I think President Trump is playing some kind of game to get GOP to start moving on action. The GOPE has been obstructing his agenda but now they look like fools and have no power (as the kid locked out of the club) as Trump is wheeling and dealing with Dems.

The only deal he promised this Trump voter was a wall and deportation.

I’m only hoping that Trump’s trying to lay a trap - seeming like an agreeable guy willing to negotiate for the wall for dreamers and then blaming the Democrats for being unwilling to deal when the government shuts down. But, I’m not optimistic.

You all know what “border security” means right? No F’n wall that’s what it means. Betrayal and capitulation.

I totally agree. I wonder how mark bradman over at Conservative Treehouse will be spinning this daca development as a big win for Trump and MAGA.

If trump actually goes thru with this amnesty his base is done. Amnesty for all will be the next step.

To me, this is an issue that can’t be negotiated with. Either we have a nation, or we simply become a jurisdiction of globalist elites. I’ve already made plans should SHTF.

I sure hope Trump isn't planning a deal like this one. A deal with the Democrats for wall funding to come later is in the same category as bridges for sale and underwater swamp land.

Will not worry about the rumors. I’ll hold judgment until the actual legislation is made public.

And you came to this just now under a Trump presidency, but not under Obama? The butthurt is strong amongst all the armchair generals at FR today. This was always going to be a battle, not a walk in the park. Man up people.

1. We knew from the beginning that Trump was NOT a “conservative”. That doesn’t mean he’s a liberal, that means he’s a right-leaning centrist whose dominant goals fit that of a major CEO taking over a country. We’re not going to get everything we want, but in supporting him we’ll get a whole lot more than we would have under Herself.

2. Wait this out. We picked him, he’s smart, he thinks long-term, not everything he does now will be instantly favorable dogmatically, nor will we immediately see how it will play out.

3. Some positions are just long-term losers, even if right. DACA isn’t a hill we want to die on; we weren’t likely to win it, and spun right the loss can leverage a much bigger win elsewhere.

I’m not happy either, but Trump’s our guy and we have to trust him.

The one thing that always fascinated me with Trump during the campaign was everyone accepting that he was a fabulous negotiator.

Throughout his career, he has been a pretty terrible negotiator - often seriously overpaying for properties. What he has always been good at is getting his partners as deep into the weeds as he is so they are generous on the back-end bailout.

It was never clear to me how this strategy was going to work in politics.
