Trump says immigration deal with Democrats close, with border security

President Donald Trump said on Thursday he was close to a deal with Democratic congressional leaders on protections for illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children, a development that alarmed some of his conservative supporters.

Trump, who met with the top Democrats in the Senate and House of Representatives, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, at the White House on Wednesday evening, said any final agreement must include significant measures to protect border security.

The Republican president added that funding for his planned wall along the U.S.-Mexican border - a centerpiece of his 2016 presidential campaign - would "come later" and would not be part of any final deal on the fate of the 800,000 so-called Dreamers. But, speaking to reporters, he said Democrats "cannot obstruct the wall."

"We have to have an understanding that whether it's in the budget or some other vehicle in a very short period of time, the wall will be funded. Otherwise, we're not doing anything," Trump said as he landed in Florida to survey hurricane damage.....

There is probably only so much that can be done at the federal level. What I find more intriguing is reading about a few years ago, some people in Texas discovered that disguising themselves in clothing similar to what the Immigration and Customs people wear and simply walking around in areas where the illegals tended to congregate had the effect of driving such people out of their community and cleaning it up in that manner. Doing small, incremental things like that to resist the wealthy champagne Marxists seems like a very good idea.

Funny how most of his severest critics have 2016 and 2017 sign-on dates. Just a coincidence, I’m sure.

If he doesn’t get the wall now he’ll never get it. Especially with Ryan telling his funders it/the wall will never happen!

And if no deal is made in 6 months well then DACA is Kaput and 800K new illegal illegals! That I think is the trap/plan that has been laid by President Trump!-)

We need to look back to Reagan’s Presidency and the history around the 80s Amnesty and border wall! Reagan was schlonged by the Democrats/global communists then.

I hope our Republican POTUS is not getting in the position for a second historical schlonging!

I didn’t want him during the primaries but he won and i backed him. And i tried to put a good light on his flip flopping. But i have to say i have lived in NYC most all my 62 years and Trump has been in the papers here at least 25/30 years. He has always been about Trump first. Anything he does is about him. He could care less about you and i.

More and more = steadily increasing over the last decade. If you think it’s abated because Trump won the presidency, you are delusional (no offense). We just passed $20T debt the other day, FYI.

“The butthurt is strong amongst all the armchair generals at FR today. This was always going to be a battle, not a walk in the park. Man up people.”

Agreed. See my post about what can possibly be done locally on small, incremental levels.

Agree there is a battle. Battle should be for founding principles vs statism and feelz. Whose side is Trump on today?

We got played by Trump! If an illegal stole his helicopter would he allow the illegal’s kid to keep it??

My daughter got her identity stolen by an illegal alien. If you think that’s easy to clean up you are delusional.

Whose side is Trump on today?

Depends on whether you want to believe Trump, or Pelosi and the Washington Post.

I believe Trump meant what was in his tweets. He wants to keep illegals here.

Many people on this site are abandoning their conservative principles in favor of Trump worship. We should be champions of conservatism, not politicians.

Over the last decade was most of Obama's lawless regime. During that time many things were left to decay. And you surely see that the swamp wants to keep it that way. Congress has not actually passed a budget in, what, 8 years? If Ryan and the swamp only pass continuing resolutions, what do you expect? Trump has given them their one chance and now they have to pass a budget that will reduce the spending. He has been sidelined only by Harvey relief. And that is understandable.

As much as I would have liked to erase the last 8 years in Trumps first 100 days, it is clear that this will be a long battle. Again, I say, man up for it, or at the very least, stop whining because Trump didn't give you your Christmas present early this year. For that matter, people shouldn't put all their happiness, dreams, and hopes into any one man anyway. That's just asking for disappointment.

DACA isn’t a hill we want to die on

Yes it is

They will immediately bring their families in, more "kids" will flood the country in the anticipation of the next DACA / Amnesty. Texas will go permanently blue, Democrats win forever, USA = 3rd World $h&#hole

I believe Trump meant what was in his tweets. He wants to keep illegals here.

I believe that Trump, like many here, has a heart and feels for kids, who through no fault of their own, are now without a country. I also believe he stands for rule of law. And the right thing is to follow the rule of law. Trump will do the right thing.

He has now left it to congress, and the American people, to decide what the law will be. This to me seems like the right thing to do. I believe there will be great debate about it, and the leftists and MSM will try everything they can to get an amnesty. I also believe that the great majority of Americans will vote for rule of law and tell Dreamers they must follow the law and go to the back of the line. I don't know what the outcome will be. I have my preference and its rule of law.

Trumps only test on this will be IF congress actually passes a DACA amnesty bill, which I highly doubt, would he sign it? I reserve any other judgment until that moment has occurred. Any judgment now is just wasted speculation.

I live in the middle of illegal immigration. It is the one thing that is non negotiable for me. It is the hill to die on. I was promised DACA would go away on day 1. It didn’t. I was promised deportations and now they’re talking about letting them stay. Whether it’s amnesty or green cards, them staying is not what we were promised. Last but not least we were promised a wall. I don’t see them as entwined but each a separate issue and promise.
If he makes a deal for the DACAs, even with increased border security, it’s over for me.
I’m sick of being lied to and promises made and broke.
It really is the only thing political I really pay attention to anymore because it affects my family in so many different ways.
