Republicans hit Pingree on stock ownership
This article has been excerpted
The Maine Republican Party took a swipe Wednesday at Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Chellie Pingree, questioning some of her mutual fund holdings.
Republicans said that while Pingree criticizes the pharmaceutical industry, she owns drug industry mutual funds. Pingree has made high prescription drug prices a central issue in her campaign to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
"She has set the standard for hypocrisy in the 2002 Senate races," Maine Republican Party Executive Director Dwayne Bickford said. "Of the thousands of mutual funds that are available, Pingree has chosen one that profits from the industry that she criticizes as being too profitable and which she had made public enemy No. 1 in her campaign."
Pingree said she owns mutual funds that include a huge variety of investments, including a relatively small number in drug firms. Pingree added that she's disappointed her opponents have decided to engage in negative campaigning.
