Leahy Defends Handling of Judiciary Committee

Outgoing Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy defended his handling of the Committee this week in a statement.

"During these 15 months, we joined forces with the House Judiciary Committee to enact the first new charter for the Justice Department in two decades, and we launched the first comprehensive oversight of the FBI in just as long. We enacted new anti-terrorism laws, and I hope our close oversight of these laws, and of the FBI, will continue," said Leahy in a statement.

President Bush and the Republicans had been accusing Senate Democrats of unfairly blocking his judicial nominations for months, a factor that may have played at least some role in Democrats losing the Senate Tuesday night. Former Chairman Orrin Hatch (R) will reclaim his former position.

For his part though, Leahy continues to insist that Committee Democrats had outperformed Republicans when it came to approving nominees, and he also predicted that ideological battles over nominees would continue with the Senate under new management.

"We also restored steadiness to the judicial nominations process and did more in 15 months than had been done in the previous 30 months. We voted on 100 judicial nominees and approved 98 of them. In the next session, I expect there will continue to be disagreements over nominees who are chosen primarily for their ideology and not for their independence," added Leahy.

Leahy, you're a liar.

You dishonoured decent, qualified judges, and now you're dishonoured. Get used to it.

You're out, you foolish old disgrace.

We voted on 100 judicial nominees and approved 98 of them.

Now I am really scared of the other 98. So, it seems like only 2% of Bush's judicial appointments are conservative.

In Lie-hy's world, "independent" means kissing the backside of liberal Democratic dogma.

BTW, how many nominees did his Stasi committee _not_ vote on?

How many judges have Bush nominated so far? 150? 200? If 98 of them have been approved, then that is an overwhelming number of liberals, since they are the only ones who made it through the judiciary committee.

"I cost my party control of the Senate."
