Maryland Republicans, fresh from taking the governor's mansion, are looking for a marquee name to put up against one of the state's most popular Democrats Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski.

Among their unlikely dream candidates to face Miss Mikulski next year: Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, former Prince George's County Executive Wayne K. Curry (a Democrat) and the state's first lady, Kendel Ehrlich.

I saw her on Tv the another day.

"Shame on you Mr. Bush, Shame on you Republican party".

A truly vile woman. If she and Jarold Nadler (aka Pizza The hut) ever hook up they will spawn the antichrist.

I wouldn't count on Steele winning even if he ran. Beating an entrenched rat in a rat-leaning state is no easy task. However it would at least force the DSCC to spend money on her.

If Paul Sarabanes retires in '06, Steele or Ehrlich would have a good shot though.

Didn't somebody come extremely close to defeating Glendening? Maybe they should consider.

Extemely close in 1994.

Glendening 708,094 50.2%
Ellen Sauerbrey 702,101 49.8%

Not so close in 1998.

Glendening 846,972 55%
Ellen Sauerbrey 688,357 45%

She considered running for the 2nd CD in 2002, but opted out. I highly doubt she'd run against Mikulski in 2004. If she did, I highly doubt she'd win.

I just think it's too early for Michael Steele. I'd rather see him remain in there and succeed Ehrlich as Governor. It'd be more interesting to lure Wayne Curry to switch parties and see how well he could do or Wayne Gilchrest so we can finally get a Conservative into his House seat. Alas, MD hasn't had a decent Senator since Glenn Beall, Jr. was defeated in '76 and a bonafide Conservative since GOPer John Marshall Butler retired in 1963. Even if Sarbanes or Mikulski retire, it will be a very difficult contest.

Yep. Keep the LtGov right where he is. How about the GOP tries to convince Cal Ripken one more time? :-)

Gary Williams would make a great Senator....or the Fridge!!

Maybe Fridge and Mikulski could face off in a sumo mud wrestling match, winner take all.

Hey, they can try, it's just that I don't know bubkas for what he stands for. I could've sworn, though, that he was a self-admitted 'Rat ?

Cal Ripken, Sr. was an active conservative Republican, byt Cal's mother is a Democrat. I have heard Cal is a Republican, but have not heard about his issue positions.

I don't think Cal would beat Mikulski in 2004 (she's got too much seniority for a neophyte to defeat her), but Cal would be a perfct candidate for the 2nd CD against Dutch Ruppersberger (the district includes his original hometown of Havre de Grace, his current hometown of Aberdeen, part of Baltimore and much of its suburbs).

Against Mikulski, my first choice would be Steele, who could continue to serve as Lt. Gov. if he loses (and odds are he'd lose this time around, although he'd have a shot) and would help him for a future run against Sarbanes or for Governor in 2010. But I like DJ's idea of running Gilchrest against Mikulski, since he'd have a resonably good chance of pulling off the upset and (more importantly) it would allow a real conservative to win his House seat.

There are definitely 2 kinds of Republicans in MD (or maybe 3), the Conservative Roscoe Bartlett type, the "centrist" Bob Ehrlich type, and the hard-left Chuck Mathias type. If Ripken is one of the first two, that's good, but if he's a Mathias type, we're better off with Mikulski or Ruppersburger.

I've also heard Cal is a Pubbie, though with no real political aspirations. And I have no clue where he stands on the issues. But I've already got a nice campaign slogan for him:

I'm not Babs!

That message is confusing. It makes me think Cal would be running to replace both Mikulski and Sarbanes! :-p

It can be recycled for either taking on the menacing midget or both the Senators. :-)

>"But it would still be a long shot," said Mr. Schaller, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.
>He also said Mr. Steele fulfilled the requirements to compete against Miss Mikulski, "but I don't know if he'd make a good senator."

White liberals and their allies in academia attempt to keep black conservatives down. It's a digusting sight to watch- once minorities reject their fading ideology, white liberals suggest to the public that blacks are not qualified for the job.
