Governor heads off Ports' return to [MD] House

Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. has blocked a high-level official in the Department of Transportation from taking a second job as a member of the House of Delegates. James F. Ports Jr., a former Republican delegate, had hoped to return to the House while keeping his $112,000-a-year job as an assistant secretary at the Department of Transportation.

"I just don't think Bobby is comfortable with it," Ports said yesterday. "If he is not comfortable with it, I am not going to do it, and that is where it is going to stand."

While the attorney general's office ruled Ports could legally serve in both positions, Ehrlich thought it was inappropriate for a high-level administration official to also serve in the House, said spokesman Henry Fawell.

Wasn't this guy a potential '02 candidate for Ehrlich's house seat?

I have to agree with this. We really need to stop this double-dipping no matter how good our people are. NJ is even worse, with major-city Mayors serving simultaneously as State Senators, one reason why NJ is such a laughingstock.

We had a dem state senator here who was also Mayor of a small suburb. William Shaw.

He lost to "Independent" James Meeks friend of Jesse Jackson.

...Ehrlich thought it was inappropriate...

Now, after 8 years of corruption and helping friends and lovers make sweetheart deals at the taxpayers' expense, we finally have a governor who knows where to draw the line.

Only 8 ? This is Maryland we're talking about here. Alas, even the prior MD GOP Governor, Spiro Agnew, practiced "business as usual." What a shame, too, since he would've made a smashing President. That was someone who evolved from a RINO to a bonafide Conservative.
