Crayola Retires Four Colors, Saves One

EASTON, Pa. -- Crayola marked its 100th anniversary with a colorful celebration.

A parade and giant cake were part of the festivities at the Crayola Crayon Factory in Easton over the weekend -- along with the unveiling of the world's largest crayon.

Mary Lee DeBosh came to mark the occasion. She said as each new grandchild comes, so will the experience of visiting the factory.

One young spectator said she enjoyed the molding stations and learning how the sticks of color are made.

Crayola held a naming contest for its new colors. Jazzberry jam, mango tango, inch worm and wild blue yonder are the winners.

Crayon fans voted in an online campaign to spare one of five colors -- Burnt Sienna, Teal Blue, Blizzard Blue, Mulberry and Magic Mint -- that the company had selected to be eliminated. A spokeswoman says Crayola officials chose five colors that they considered redundant or unattractive on paper.

The winning color of the "Save the Shade" campaign was Burnt Sienna -- by popular vote on the Internet.

Crayola retired eight colors in 1990.

On first glance, I thought the title said Crayola kept the color "Burnt Smegma." That would be interesting.

You better believe it.
BS is one of the classics, Crayola just wouldn't be Crayola without it.

Agreed!! Long live Burnt Sienna. (Though it always comes out "Burnt Sierra" when I try to type it. Is there an ecofreak virus infesting my computer...?)

This was really big news last time 'round

Crayola "retired" Indian Red. At the time, there was a lot of PC noise about this but months later I found paint sample cards in a hardware store labeled Indian Red as Crayola sold paint meant for kids rooms. Thought this a bit ironic at the time.

I'm sorry, but I liked the colors better before the Metrosexuals got involved.

(What color is an "inch-worm", anyway?, or a "jazzberry"?)

Maybe someday they will re-issue the original 64 as a nostalgia edition.

I do remember the excitement in childhood when they came out with a fluorescent 8-pak. And who can forget that Crayola odor!
