ROTTERDAM, Wednesday - The construction of what will be the largest mosque in Europe got underway in Rotterdam yesterday. For the Moroccan community, a "dream has come true", stated M. Al Sayegh on behalf of the Essalam Mosque management as the foundation stone was laid.
A great deal of commotion surrounded the arrival of the mosque during the past few months. The municipality agreed in principle with the Essalam foundation that the original design would be adjusted. The 50 metre high minarets and the large dome were too Arabian, considered alderman Pastors. But last week, the mosque reported it was sticking to the original design after all. Pastors had no choice but to accept this as the construction had already been approved in 1999.
Mayor Opstelten did not seem to take any offence yesterday. The mosque "is nice for Rotterdammers to see or to show others", as he commented. He did however acknowledge that he would have preferred some adjustments. "We believe that the propagation of faith sometimes benefits from a reserved rather than an explicit approach."
The mosque has a separate entrance for men and women. In addition to a prayer hall, it will house a shop, library, kitchen, classrooms, offices and a conference hall. The construction is financed by a sheikh from the United Arab Emirates and should be complete in 2005.
The huge mosque will replace Essalam's smaller prayer house in Rotterdam. Essalam received a poor rating in a municipal research report last June into the social role of Rotterdam's mosques. The conclusion read that Essalam organised activities that did too little to promote integration.

As if we needed another reason to lose sleep. I just hope Abdul chooses to proclaim "Allah akhb-" within range of a particularly proficient CCW holder.
Holland was a predominantly Christian country which is now apostate. It has been in then vanguard of many of the liberal/modernist movements which have wrought such harm in the Catholic Church. Its church-going citizens have dwindled in numbers to a mere handful.
The apathy and apostasy of Europe's Christians is now helping the Muslims achieve what their armies could not in the Middle Ages. They are filling a vacuum.
It also needs to be said that the only real and effective bulwark to expanding Islam across the planet is a vibrant and healthy Christianity. Secular means won't do it, nor will bombs and bullets nor turning their countries into multi-party democracies. We will learn this the hard way.

"Judging from the headline in the TELEGRAAF there is indeed an increasingly nervous and intolerant mood. Whereas in the past, the papers might have hesitated to underline the ethnic identity of troublemakers, now they do not. The TELEGRAAF opens today, for example, with a huge headline saying that the minister of integration wants to penalize the parents of Moroccan juvenile delinquents by reducing their "welfare and unemployment payments". A columnist in the TELEGRAAF attacks the VOLKSKRANT for only just now beginning to acknowledge the daily "terror" caused by "young Moroccan gangsters", and he says, "Look out when you go outside. It's war out there.""

"The latest incident, reported by all the papers today, involves the harassment and intimidation of old people and personnel at a nursing home in the west of Amsterdam. Juveniles reportedly urinate in the entrance, throw balls, cans and stones at the windows, make noise at night and have tried to break in. According to one 72-year-old resident of the nursing home who is quoted in the ALGEMEEN DAGBLAD, "Most of those boys are Moroccans. At least, that's what we keep hearing. And you can tell.
