My thankfulness for his being 4-paws-up lingers, too.

Also, has anyone ever rationally explained what the TV networks found so complelling about this event that they devoted hours of prime time coverage to it?

I've always felt that the networks were merely doing what they have always done - give the event lots of coverage in an effort to carry water for their Democratic soul mates. As another poster mentioned earlier, the race between Coleman and Wellstone was very tight before the crash - the experts wouldn't even name a winner, calling it a toss-up. No doubt the media and the Democrats saw Wellstone's death as merely an opportunity to reap a huge PR bonanza, to get enough of a boost to push the Democrat over the top.

This complete soullessness and crass opportunism, using a man's death as some kind of political stunt to elect more Democrats, was something the Democrats didn't even bother to hide as the funeral rally, and it was this that so many people found offensive about the entire spectacle. The fact that to this day Democrats and their media allies are even arguing about this, claiming that the whole rally story was nothing more than a distortion and exaggeration, perpetrated by the RNC and Fox News, of a few isolated acts at the event, is simply a stunning proof of how discombobulated the Democratic Party has become from the electorate.
