Exotic relics found in ancient nomads' tombs in Inner Mongolia

www.chinaview.cn 2003-10-28 17:13:28

¡¡¡¡HOHHOT, Oct. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Judging from bronze articles unearthed from ancient tombs in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, archaeologists estimate that nomadic tribes in north China had contacts with Western civilizations approximately 2,500 years ago.

¡¡¡¡Local archaeologists found a bronze mirror and a bronze plate at the two ancient tomb sites in Liangcheng county which can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 B.C.) and the Warring States Period (475-221 B.C.), which they believed could not be the work of ancient northern peoples in China.

¡¡¡¡The semi-circle button of the mirror and the plate design of a weird beast with a bird's head and a tiger's body resembled very much the style of relics excavated in the hinterland of the Eurasian grass plain extending eastwards from the Black Sea to the outer Trans-Baikalia region in Russia, said Cao Jian'en, a noted researcher with the regional archaeology institute.

¡¡¡¡The round mirror is approximately 10 cm in diameter and its semicircle button, through which archaeologists believed the mirror was tied to its user for convenience, is only about one centimeter in radius.

¡¡¡¡More than 80 tombs were unearthed from the two sites and some 200 ornaments, numerous bone utensils for daily use and production purpose, and bones of sacrifice animals including horses, oxen, sheep and dogs were found in the tombs.

¡¡¡¡Archaeologists said the animal sacrifice showed that the tombs belonged to nomads.

¡¡¡¡According to Cao, the makers of the tombs were native Rong and Di people, two minority ethnic groups in ancient China later to assimilated by the Hun people, called Xiongnu in the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.- A.D. 220).

¡¡¡¡The discovery of the tombs will provide valuable clues to the research of the origin of the Hun people, Cao said.

Fascinating, Blam. Say, has the archological survey of the Black Sea bed turned up anything interesting?

The Scythians have nothing to do with the Huns...they were an Iranian people speaking an Indo-European language. There are a number of passages in Herodotus in which he talks about them. At one point he says "the Persians call all Scythians Sacae." That sounds like part of a joke from "Laugh In": "they may be Scythians to you, but they're Sacae to me."

Kennewick Man has been dated to 7300BC and Spirit Cave Man (Oldest mummy in America) has been dated to 7400BC.

I really think these are the ancient precursers of the Vikings. Rome and Greece have records of Vikings coming down the Volga and doing trade. The name "Russia" is derived from "Rus," meaning "red" which was the name by which the vikings were known in Rome. The part of China where this was found is adjacent to Russia.

This phenotype was very robust and gave rise to many different subcultures over time, and I think it spread itself farther and wider that has generally been reckoned, and inserted itself into the gene pool all over the world.

"Better fearlessnes than faintness of heart for him who would put his nose out of doors! The length of my life and the day of my death were fated, long ago!" ... A very robust group.

I wonder if these are the same people as the ones with the multicolored hats?

I agree. The Han Dynasty emperors were noted for having 'magic men' with red hair.

900AD paintings from the caves at the Buddhist monestary at Bezekik, Turfnan, central Asia.

Some say the Tocharians brought Buddhism to China.
