"The Passion of the Christ undoubtedly falls into an art-historical tradition; any of its violence will have, prima facie, a context lacking in, say, Lethal Weapon 4."
A particularly strange comment in a piece riddled with strange comments. How does the violence in a film about the crucifiction of Christ lack "context"?

I've read definitions like this, as well as other interpretations. Look, I'm not a theologician and I don't play one on TV. As I tried to stress, it isn't the real meanning of the passage that an evil person would use anyway...a rotten rabble rouser would would simply be using whatever is available to generate anger
Rather like Jessica, and some of Gibson's critics.
Thanks for the reply

Oh yeah, I get it it. A christ complex, that really comes through in those early and mid 1980's mindf**ks he starred in.
Take for example Lethal weapon.
For starters, Gary Bussey obviously represents the Jewish aritocracy of the time of the crucifiction. Furthermore, there has never been a better metaphor for the resurection than when Mel Gibson kills that chinese dude who was shocking him with that big electricrified microphone looking thing. Pure genious.
Have any of you noticed that the same chinese dude was killed by Bruce Willis in Die Hard - he was the guy who got the 9mm clip emptied into him whilst his blood splattered against the wall.
That guy loves getting killed by Hollwood republicans, huh?

This is just more self-serving Catholics-are-Nazis bigotry.
They can really shovel the bull... Scapegoating Catholics does not elevate public discourse.
Maybe Garry Wills is the only Catholic they can think of...
Sad.

I should think that God made incarnate would transcend 21st Century political labels.

Agreed. Especially when Muslims are Nazis seems to be some horrific statement of xenophobia, when it is demonstrable that Arabs are victims/perpetrators of Nazi propaganda.

It seems to be Christ who is actually the target of loathing. The writer seems unaware that Christianity finds the image of Christ in all human suffering and that this is not some unique spin of Mr. Gibson.
We would suspect what they really hate is that Catholicism does not allow you to shove scissors into an infant's head and suction the child's brains out without being guilty of MURDER. The people who support that have a lot of nerve throwing around Nazi slurs.

Also appears that Jessica was paid by the word.
That whole river of drivel could be reduced to about three coherent graphs, which would have the wrong conclusion, but wouldn't take NEARLY as long to wade through.

Notice this repetitive trend of smearing Catholics, trashing Catholicism, the constant Hitler allusions as if there were a connection. This is bizarre even by delusional paranoid, liberal, pro-culture-of-death standards. Imagine if you replaced every Catholic reference with "jew" or "black"...the outcry about the "hate speech" would be loud and clear. But for Catholics...it's open season.

These people are such ignoramuses. Has the author of this piece ever read the Gospels? If he did, he conveniently glossed over a number of important lines attributed to Christ for the simple purpose of fulfilling his own anti-Christian agenda.
