CBS Evening News Moved to Showtime

(2003-11-04) -- Just hours after deciding to sell the planned CBS miniseries 'The Reagans' to the Showtime cable movie channel, network chief Les Moonves announced that the 'CBS Evening News with Dan Rather' would also move to Showtime starting in December.

"It just doesn't work," Moonves told staffers. "Listen, we are not afraid of controversy, we'd go out there if it came in at 50-50, pro and con, but it simply isn't working. It's biased."

According to an unnamed CBS insider, "He made up his own mind after seeing it. He's made a brave, decisive move."

"It just doesn't work," Moonves told staffers...

In it's time slot I have placed "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet".

Actually, this probably isn't that far from the truth. No one watches CBS for news anymore, and the programming directors would probably LOVE that airtime for more programming like "Survivor".

I'll never forget when Rather signed off of Imus one day saying "Tamp 'em up solid".

Imus and his staff couldn't figure out what the hell he was talking about and thought Rather had said something about tampons.

(Rather came on later to "explain" that he came from a long line of ditch diggers and this was a common expression among them like "take care of yourself".)

Just for my curiousity more than anything, but what is CBS?

Never heard of it.

Dan must have an old book somewhere that is a collection of witty sayings and sage advice. He recognized it as a gold mine of nuggets that he could inject into his sermons.

Unfortunately, more often than not, in his innate ignorance and sorry fashion sense, Rather chooses these obscure phrases to hopefully convince the listener that he is a wise and brillant man who once stood down Hurricane Carla on the Galveston Seawall and wore a lime green safari suit with matching shoulder holstered .38 cal pistol as he filed reports from his Saigon hotel bar corner sandbagged cocktail table to Uncle Walter who no doubt encouraged the halfwit to pursue this method of slanted reportage.
