Another good reason to make sure our borders are safe and secure. You know, it's interesting how many Canadians get upset if you say they are in decline, or if you talk about their creeping socialism, or if you dare to suggest that they are no friend of America. I get called all kinds of names when I point out that the emperor has no clothes :-)

Mark's writing is a masterpiece of clarity.

I disagree with one thing: It is highly likely that the Dutch, and some other Europeans, will be living under the Shariah in our lifetime.

One of America's greatest problems today is whether to abandon Europe or to save it.

Europeans themselves are determined to abandon Europe in a terminal paroxysm of hopelessness, nihilism, decadence, and self-destruction.

Muslims are determined to conquer Europe, and they are making great strides thanks to their European enablers.

Americans are faced with these questions: Is Europe worth saving for future generations? Can Europe be saved? What is the price and is it worth paying?

As Americans consider these questions and come to consequent decisions, the opinions of contemporary Europeans become more obviously irrelevant.

The only consideration is what's in America's best interest.

In my opinion, Europe is worth fighting for--not because it is worth saving contemporary Europeans from their own self-destruction but because Europe itself is too valuable to abandon. The question is the price.

Well, I guess Steyn is entitled to his opinion. Obviously, I can't agree with him but he's certainly entitled to voice his thoughts.

Saruman/Wormtongue.

Frodo isn't king,
of course, literally, but
poetically

the Hobbit's story
is an echo of the grand
Aragorn story.

I only get upset if you paint us all with the same brush. THIS Canadian is most certainly a friend of the USA, as a great many other are up here too. And trust me, the decline and socialism up here bothers me more than it does you.

You really underestimate the potential for disaster. The civil war had the two groups geographicly divided, away from the actual battles, life went on with few changes for most. When you have two groups fighting eachother that are already intermingled, the battlefield is everywhere. Businesses can't open, basic police and medical services break down or are overwhelmed, communications and utilities are disrupted, it becomes every man for himself and the enemy of your enemy is still your enemy.

An enemy nation would be far wiser to sit back and supply arms to both sides secretly, fueling the conflict untill the level of destruction and chaos makes an organized and effective response to invasion near impossible.

Thinking that the USA is too powerful, too well established, to fall and fall fast is a step towards it's fall. The USA continues by God's grace, and if we become so corrupt that He withdraws that grace, the end will follow swiftly no matter how strong we are.

I hear ya :-). I am aware that there are fine and decent Canadians, but I do speak of "Canada" in general, just as I do "France" or "Germany" or "Syria" in general, too.And I know that there are fine and decent Germans or French or Syrians too -- but the countries are not our friend and that is an important point to me.

It's ok with me if you remind me from time to time that you're out there and one of the good guys :-)

I understand how you feel. I lived in Vancouver for 20 years, and the stranglehold of the govt of central Canada seems impossible to overcome. Americans have no concept of the reality that is the virtual dictatorship of Chretien and his cabinet.

That's a bit of a reach in my book. Frodo's roll in the defeat of Saruman is rather minor compared to Aragorn's role in defending Gondor. Nor does Frodo get a lot of credit for what he did, Merry and Pippin are seen as the heros by the Shirefolk.
