Frist Disbands Senate Intel Committee Over Memogate
NewsMax ^ | 11/8/03 | Limbacher

Posted on 11/08/2003 8:29:55 AM PST by Tumbleweed_Connection

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has temporarily disbanded the Senate Intelligence Committee until committee Democrats reveal the identity of the author of a memo outlining a their plan to politicize intelligence data in a bid undermine President Bush's reelection.

"The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has been harmed by a blatant partisan attack," the Tennessee Republican said in a floor speech yesterday, concluding that the memo had rendered the committee "incapable of meeting its responsibilities to the United States Senate and to the American people."

"Those responsible for this memo appear to be more focused on winning the White House than they are on winning the war against terror," Frist complained before adding, "There will be no more pulling along and no more useful collaboration on partisan schemes."

Committee Chairman Pat Roberts echoed Frist's decision to shut his committee down, saying, "Unless and until this reprehensible attack plan and strategy to derail the committee's important work is properly addressed, I am afraid that it will be impossible to return to business as usual in the committee."

A committee meeting scheduled for yesterday was canceled, and none has been scheduled for next week, a senior committee staff member told the Washington Post.

Frist also demanded that Democrats implicated in the Memogate scandal deliver "a personal apology" to Sen. Roberts.

Though retiring Georgia Democratic Sen. Zell Miller has called the memo, first leaked to radio host Sean Hannity on Tuesday, "perhaps treasonous," other Democrats circled the wagons on Friday.

Nevada Sen. Harry Reid complained on the Senate floor that the memo had been "pilfered" by Republicans then leaked to the media, saying that act was just as offensive as anything revealed by the controversial document.

This story is still NOWHERE, other than Fox News. I haven't seen who will be on the Sunday talk show circuit, but sure do hope the republicans send out some of the good guy and get this story out there.

I keep saying this but apparently nobody is paying attention. Frist takes his orders from the President. He would not be going nuclear without an express "yes" from the President.

Nobody "changed their minds". They were just stalling until a decision was made as to what to do about the memo.

Seized Intelligence Files Spur U.S. Investigations

By Steve Coll
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, November 3, 2003; Page A15

BAGHDAD, Nov. 2 -- The CIA has seized an extensive cache of files from the former Iraqi Intelligence Service that is spurring U.S. investigations of weapons procurement networks and agents of influence who took money from the government of Saddam Hussein, according to U.S. officials familiar with the records.

(snip)

The officials declined to name individuals who they believe received funds or to name the home countries of the alleged recipients. One official said the recipients held high-ranking positions and worked both in Arab countries and in other regions. A second official said the payments were the subjects of "active investigations" by U.S. government agencies.

The recipients of the Iraqi funds were described by U.S. officials not as formal intelligence agents, but as prominent personalities and political figures who accepted money from Iraq as they defended Hussein publicly or pressed his causes.

Wow! Great job Nita!

Did you guys see this?

Hallmark of a leader is to let about 6 mos. go by after the last leader vacated before making big decisions or policy changes of your own. Gives time for everyone to settle into a routine. You'll find weaknesses and strengths in friends and enemies. Comfortable people fall back into habits, etc.. After six months, you begin to unfold your plans and procedures while taking steps towards all goals.

Frist's first unique discourse occurred after the Supreme Court allowed European Law to dictate sodomy laws in the country. Frist was bold and clear. He stood firm concerning Constitutional Law and the President and Republicans rallied around him AFTER the public endorsed his ballsy courage. Dubya took front stage and Frist took his appointed position to the rear. Very honorable and benefitial!!!

Now, Frist is asserting his leadership and the rule of constitutional/parliamentary laws in his domain. Doesn't matter if Hatch, RINOs, or Dems like it or hate it; they will respect it! They will do it!

Frist is a man to watch. His star is about to rise. This decision is announcing The Frist Era of the Senate. Watch the liberal media in the coming months leading up to Election 2004; they will try to Bork and Newt the Senate Leader. If Frist and Dubya have calculated correctly, this will be amusing and entertaining.

I can't wait for the Sunday political shows. The networks have squelched this story or given it minimal coverage. Now they have no choice but to give it air time and you know it just kills them.

The mainstream media is all but irrelevant any more.

If the Left really thought that was true, then they would be signing petitions to urge the network TV news media to cover this scandal.

Instead, they want this whole thing to go away.

It won't.

Having it written by a staffer and approved by a Senator is bad enough - but if the Senator actually hatched the memo (Hillary) they need to be expelled immediately .. if not sooner!!

"Pilfered"?.....I don't think so. The Republicans did not seek out this memo. Someone with close ties to the committee, who apparently saw this dispicable Rat plot for what it is, put the good of their country above the good of the Democratic party, and came forward with this memo. The Republicans now have to turn up the heat, making sure the people of this country know about this memo, and what the implications are for national security. They have to blast the Dems 24/7 in the media the way the Rats did with Trent Lott after Strom Thurmond's birthday celebration. Unlike Lott's innocent, off the cuff remark, this is a calculated, closely coordinated Rat plot to undermine our efforts in Iraq, and our national security, for the purpose of political gain. The Republicans need to do everything possible to see to it that the American people are made aware of the true significance of the Dem's actions.

I've been writing out emails for a couple of days now demanding a full investigation and the immediate resignation of Rockefeller. Monday I'll be making phone calls too. I have a feeling that's why Frist decided to get a clue and a spine at the same time. I believe we need to keep those letters and phone calls rolling in. The Democrats have revealed themselves as the treasonous scum that that they are. Take 'em out back and shoot 'em!

Many of us were wondering when what was in some of those boxes found in Iraq after the big war was over, would find its way over here.

Thanks to Nita Nupress, it looks like we now know why the Rats on the intell committee have been going ballastic. They have seen some of the names. This is a $hit storm to bury the release of those names.

Even IF Sean hadn't kept repeating the same words, on his T.V. and radio show all week, I would have remembered, word for word, what he had said about this. As to WHO gave him the memo, I can't even begin to hazard a guess. I have a feeling that not just Dems, would be shocked by who it is and THAT is what makes it impossible for us to specualte. I bet it's some heretofore HATED and REVILED, by the likes of us, Dem SENATOR, who just couldn't stomach ( for some reason or aother ) this garbage. Everyone, after all, has their limits.

The 'rats like to believe that a republican snuck into a 'rat office and stole it out of a trash can, but the truth is much worse...for them.

A 'rat couldn't stomach being party to treason, and ratted out his own 'rat boss. He'd had enough. Their greatest fear now is that this leaker could turn whistle-blower on a far greater scale than one memo.
