Frist Disbands Senate Intel Committee Over Memogate

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has temporarily disbanded the Senate Intelligence Committee until committee Democrats reveal the identity of the author of a memo outlining a their plan to politicize intelligence data in a bid undermine President Bush's reelection.

"The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has been harmed by a blatant partisan attack," the Tennessee Republican said in a floor speech yesterday, concluding that the memo had rendered the committee "incapable of meeting its responsibilities to the United States Senate and to the American people."

"Those responsible for this memo appear to be more focused on winning the White House than they are on winning the war against terror," Frist complained before adding, "There will be no more pulling along and no more useful collaboration on partisan schemes."

Committee Chairman Pat Roberts echoed Frist's decision to shut his committee down, saying, "Unless and until this reprehensible attack plan and strategy to derail the committee's important work is properly addressed, I am afraid that it will be impossible to return to business as usual in the committee."

A committee meeting scheduled for yesterday was canceled, and none has been scheduled for next week, a senior committee staff member told the Washington Post.

Frist also demanded that Democrats implicated in the Memogate scandal deliver "a personal apology" to Sen. Roberts.

Though retiring Georgia Democratic Sen. Zell Miller has called the memo, first leaked to radio host Sean Hannity on Tuesday, "perhaps treasonous," other Democrats circled the wagons on Friday.

Nevada Sen. Harry Reid complained on the Senate floor that the memo had been "pilfered" by Republicans then leaked to the media, saying that act was just as offensive as anything revealed by the controversial document.

My question for this whole matter -- and I think it must be considered and the Dims called on the carpet:

If this had been a Republican leak and a Republican staff worker the dims would be screaming for the resignation of both.

Look at what happened to Trent Lott on a simple linguistic goof.

What's good for the goose (Republicans) is good for the gander (dims).

We need to push this point voiciferously! Call, fax or email your Senator!

Senators by state.

This is surprising. The story seemed to be fading with no traction, and the Repubs were playing kiss-and-makeup at first. I figured they'd keep it in their pocket to block any future independent investigation, but I didn't expect they'd make a big show of the memo like this.

I wonder what changed their minds?

Oh, and why are the Dems assuming the memo was stolen? As far as I've heard Hannity has been mum on the source to the extent it could have been a Dem staffer. Is there evidence otherwise?

Frist announces a 30 hour Senate session to break the deadlock on judicial nominees and now THIS! Sen. Frist, you are beginning to make a believer out of me. I hope this sudden spinal infusion continues! Lets find the treasonous traitor that wrote this "memo" and parade him/her down Main street USA for ALL Americans to see!

I have been wondering about those documents myself. I think you are quite right. Should be an interesting couple of weeks, don't you think?

Right, exposing attempted murder - which would have been the ultimate result of their actions - is always viewed as just as bad as the attempted murder itself. I sure am glad he pointed that out as we might have missed it in all the outrage over dim indifference to the future of our brave military or even our country.

Well, good for Frist! About time. Of course, the slimey little weasels are no doubt meeting anyway, although not officially. I wish we would just throw every one of them out on their ears and start all over. There are at least a few democRATs in public office that should be tried for treason. My personal opinion is that there are more than a few.

Ah yes, there are always possibilities, some good and some just plain EEEVILL..

But, better to try and force this issue than not to do anything because of possibilities. Never know what is going to happen but to not take action because of possible futures is, well.........I guess what Republicans have been doing in the Senate for years.

DAMN!! Just wiped out my whole post!!

Great!!! A spine *and* other necessary anatomical features!!

Note this miserable excuse by the Dems:

Nevada Sen. Harry Reid complained on the Senate floor that the memo had been "pilfered" by Republicans then leaked to the media, saying that act was just as offensive as anything revealed by the controversial document.

That's tantamount to saying that "outing" a criminal is just as bad if not worse than the original criminal act. Doublespeak and lies. The liberal/leftist language in a nutshell.
