Hugh Hewitt: What Memo?
Weekly Standard ^ | 11/13/2003 12:00:00 AM | Hugh Hewitt

SEAN HANNITY'S big scoop is not generating the headlines it ought to. The memo Hannity obtained and made public that details the plans by Democratic staff on the Senate Intelligence Committee to politicize the committee's investigations in the service of partisan politics far overshadows in importance Secretary of Defense Don Rumsfeld's memo pushing the Pentagon to think about the hard problems ahead in the war on terrorism, but it has received significantly less attention than the Rumsfeld memo did.

Why?

Three reasons could account for the disparity in treatment:

The most obvious explanation is that elite media is populated by left-leaning reporters and editors not inclined to throw spotlights on a memo the contents of which Democratic senator Zell Miller has called the "first cousin of treason."

A second explanation focuses on the fact that Hannity--a radio and television guy, not a print fellow--got the scoop, and newspapers hate being upstaged by talking heads.

The third theory is the most plausible: The Democratic memo reveals that much of what the media has been focusing on for the past six months has been a set-up job. The staff and Democratic members of the Senate Intelligence Committee have been selling story after story (think the Niger yellowcake and "imminent" threat controversies). Out of whole cloth, they have contrived an ambiguous but ominous speculation about the Bush administration's sinister motives for invading Iraq. Now, through this one memo, they have been revealed as nothing short of cynical political operatives. And the reporters who ran with their hints

NO NO NO! You don't understand. Allow me to set you straight.
1 We all KNOW that the national media is conservative(right?), it has to be because it's owned by rich people and evil rich corp.(now stay with me)
2 The liberals (the true defenders of freedom of the press and speech) really did discover this memo and in spite of the fact that it would hurt their allies, and because of their unswerving dedication to "THE TRUTH" they published it for all the world to see. (the plot thicken!)
3 The evil rich people(what other kind of rich person is there?) and the Evil conservative corps. that own and control the media in a giant plot to make the left look bad squashed the story of the memo.
So you see it's all a giant nefarious plot(and they're the worst kind) by the VRWC.

Perhaps for the fourth reason, they remember that the dems "queen" in waiting would be tarred quite liberally by that brush because of the actions of herself and her hubby.

I don't think they want Chinagate to rear it's ugly head again, or almost any one of a million and one scandals that might hurt them.

Think of a fish flopping on the bottom of a rowboat gasping for air - doesn't it remind you of what is happening to the Dems??

Yep ! I agree. I think Rushbo will hit this AND the 'RAT Senate obstruction story (The 30 hour talkathon by the GOP).

From some of the articles on Rush that I have seen, a lot of folks here on FR have written off Rush. I will be glad to see him come back (even though I don't hear his show very often). It will be interesting to see if he indeed is doing well (as EIB corporate indicated a week or so ago). I am willing to give him a chance and not condemn him. He screwed up, but sought help for his problem.

As I've been posting since he announced his problem and would get help ...

Monday, November 17th Rush will be back !! ...

Hugh has indeed nailed it, again. He is hammering this issue in a move right out of Joshua Micah Marshall's own playbook - Keep the issue hot until someone notices. But, unlike Mr. Marshall's political alchemy, Hugh is clinging to an issue that is meaningful, substantive, factual, scandalous, and truly a threat to the National Security and the well-being of our families. Unlike the silly Plame game, the seditious behavior of some (Democrat) members of the S.I.C. might very well get thousands (or ten's of thousands) or people killed.

Swing away, Hugh! Swing away!
