German MP expelled from parliamentary party

German Christian Democrat MP Martin Hohmann has been expelled from the CDU parliamentary party. His position became untenable after making remarks last month that were considered anti-Semitic.

He argued that the Jewish people are as capable of committing crimes as the Germans, because Jewish communists were guilty of many acts of cruelty during the Russian revolution of 1917. His parliamentary party voted 195 to 28 in favour of his expulsion. Party leader Angela Merkel called it "a difficult day for everyone".
