Thank God. You never know with juries today what they'll decide.

It's capital murder, does that mean automatic death penalty?

Wow, I am stunned, but happy. The wacky way by which cases are being decided by both judges and juries these days had me thinking the jurists may well find the pondscum innocent.
To: Hillary's Lovely Legs
Not automatic--but as close as you can get.

Good. But I swear if I see my state (Maryland) move to spend money prosecuting this little s*** while the good state of Virginia is trying to cook him, I'll be quite angry.

A jury that's composed of people who have personally been looking over their shoulders in parking lots is going to be a lot more realistic in its assessment than, say, a bunch of folks in central LA who were never near Brentwood and never saw O.J. anywhere other than on TV . . . .

Can you imagine what would have happened had he been tried in a liberal state? After a month's deliberations, jury would have been hung.
Anyway, good news the creep is on his way upriver, possibly to a cozy cell on death row. When will sentence be handed down?
To: Catspaw
Virginia jury don't have a problem with the DP.

Anxiously awaiting sentencing for this Islamist terrorist. It seems so long ago, but what name did CNN, etc., attempt to use in the place of "Muhummed" in the immediate hours after he was arrested? Remember those first few hours when Judy Woodruff and other members of the media would say "Muhammed" and have this pained expression on their faces?
To: Hillary's Lovely Legs
Not automatically. The convictions
qualify for the death penalty under Virginia justice code, but now the jury has to decide the sentence. During the penalty phase of the trial, they can opt for "life" or "life without parole" if they choose.
(Been there, done that, served as a juror in a VA death penalty case.)

Let's see how much they tell us now about what the FBI has learned of John Muhammad's links to Jamaat al Fuqra, which is the creation Sheikh Gilani, a Pakistani terror lord and a mentor of Osama bin Laden. |

The so-called "rocket docket" is the US District Court for Eastern VA (Alexandria). I believe this trial was taking place in state court, not federal.

A jury that's composed of people who have personally been looking over their shoulders in parking lots is going to be a lot more realistic in its assessment Well, the jury pool was pulled in the Va. Beach area, about three hours from where most of the murders/attacks occurred. But undoubtedly these jurors shared some of the fear.

Any reason why these two weren't tried together? Would have saved the taxpayers even more money. A double-execution would save money too.

The trials of Mohammad and Malvo are taking place in State courts in Norfolk and Chesapeake, Virginia. They moved the trials as far from the scene of the crimes as they could, while still being in a major city in Virginia.
To: surely_you_jest
Thanks. I knew it was there -- just wondered if they had it anywhere else.
