And it isn't a simple 51-49% majority. It is in the 70-80% range

* a word about the fox numbers...
although their web page headlines the poll "Six in 10 Americans oppose allowing gays and lesbians to marry", in fact their sample was restricted to registered voters. since only about 65% of adults in the US are registered to vote, fox's results, while interesting, cannot give us an accurate picture of what "Americans" think on the matter.

you majority has not been in to 70-80 range for decades now.

but support of civil union tends to lead that of marriage by 10-15 %

Oh ok .. the poll I remember seeing said it was 82% was against gay marriage

i think you're remembering wrong or else you were looking at an unscientific online poll.
