[history]
BERLIN -- German scientists said Monday they have developed a computer system to reconstruct millions of files on informants torn up by the East German secret police -- within years rather than centuries.
After the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, the Stasi security police tore up into jigsaw puzzle-size pieces documents on their huge network, which include meticulous observations on East Germans and foreigners deemed a threat to the state. About 15 people have been working at the Berlin archive for Stasi documents meticulously piecing together scraps by hand.

There will probably be a fire that consumes the files, or the pieces will be re-assembled one day after the statute of limitations runs on the offenses.
Okay, an attack of cynicism brought on by 8 years of living under the Clintonistas. Clintonistas were very good at gaming the handling of prosecutions and evidence to make sure that statutes of limitations ran on Clintonista crimes.

I sorry but any file reconstruction that proves that Senator McCarthy was right or that Stasi was controlling and paying American media types, or that there were communist spies working in the state department will not be covered by today's American media because it might divulge the name of a source. We also asked the European media to extend the courtesy of publishing only the Stasi files that establish that Bush did it.

Did they not have matches back then?
Who the hell would stand there and tear up hundreds of thousands of papers into little squares?
Weird, those guys - what with the tearing up papers and the genocide.

veddyinteresteengClick on the "Stasi" keyword (among others) for more. Lots of commies and symps exposed already, from the leadership of the Nuclear Disarmament movement and the German socialist party to skater Katrina Witt and "journalist" Günter Wallraff (think German Michael Moore).

I suspect a few American politicians were working for the Soviets until the collapse of the USSR, and some of them are still in politics.
Congressman Rangel of NY has a strong love affair with Castro that goes beyond the traditional leftist sympathy with commies. He also a brilliant man, the kind that the Soviets recruited to work surreptiously for the commies.

Wouldn't it have been easier to BURN the files, rather than tear them up?

It was either Gotcha, Go Trabi Go, or the one with Val Kilmer where they played tic-tac-toe with the windows...

Most savvy Intel orgs will shred or tear up files that they *want* the opposition to reconstruct.
While the good stuff either gets traded or vaporized...

Wouldn't it have been easier to BURN the files, rather than tear them up? These guys were COMMIES, so don´t wonder about what they did... ;-)

It was "Top Secret", the Val Kilmer movie. The other funny sight gag was the government official who rubber stamped everything with "Find Him and Kill Him." Still one of the funniest movies of all time. Gotcha! was another good one, especially when Jonathan finally makes it back to West Berlin and the first thing he does is go to McDonalds and orders "a big American hamburger, with large 'American' french fries, no bratwurst, no wienerschnitzels." (besides it had Linda Fiorentino in it!!!)

We had Gotcha on Laserdisc in the shop where I served in Germany so I got to see it several times...
I have never heard of anyone going to an optometrist stating that they needed help or pain relief because they had seen Linda Fiorentino in a movie... In other words, she is very easy on the eyes!!!!
Thank you for reminding me of the name of that movie...
BTW... My favorite part of "Gotcha" was when Anthony Edwards came back from East Berlin and said what he said to the East Germans... (I think similar words may have been unfairly directed at Toby Keith by the Dixie Chicks)... The Border Guard then said, "I have been wanting to say that for six months!"

millions of files on informants torn up by the East German secret police I knew that the Stasi were low lifes, but I thought they'd at least advanced to the point of being able to make a fire.
