When a liberal says it, it's novel and thought provoking.

I question whether Cohen is still liberal. On the two issues he writes about, AA and animal rights, he is on the conservative side on both. When someone is conservative on the issues they care about and liberal on issues they don't much care about, that is close enough to conservative to me. I guess that by saying he is still liberal, he disarms his critics just a little bit. Fine by me.

Actually, some have noted that conservatism on any given subject is directly proportional to the knowledge one has on that subject. That is, whatever their positions may be on indifferent matters, people are most conservative on the subjects they know most about. Not coincidentally, these might also be subjects they care about as well.
