If they can't give this guy a death sentence, then I'm not sure any jury can ever give anyone a death sentence.

Cocur..but the real question will be, IMHO, if they casn't vote for death, it'll probably be ONE juror who's opposed to the deathpenalty in principal, and who thus lied during the jury selection process...

Did they ever show the car and its 'sniper nest' during the trial?

If anyone has links to this evidence I'd appreciate you sharing them. Thanks in advance.

Perhaps we will be able to change the title of this thread to "Muhammad Sentenced to Death." It would be satisfying in more ways than one.

Too bad they can't give him the death sentence and sentence to carried out immediately, because now we'll have years of endless appeals.

I am very nearly an anti-death penalty absolutist.

This guy is the case that makes it difficult for me. I will have a very difficult time being upset if this jury comes back with the death penalty.

So much for the principled position!

Yes. Check the special section on the sniper trial(s) at www.washingtonpost.com. They've covered both trials (Muhammed and Malvo) in great detail.

I'm typically okay with not giving death sentences too, as long as life in prison means just that. Unfortunately, all too often life in prison is 20 years.

This case is different and I hope he fries.

yes they did show it. The jury asked if they had to be unanimous in their decision...judge told them yes and then a female juror asked for permission to research capital punishment over the weekend and the judge tod her HELL NO. Leads me to believe that there's a lady on that jury who doesn't want to see the b*stard fry. Hope she comes around.

Yeah, we got this Thomas Trantino guy in Jersey. Kills two cops in cold blood, is convicted and sentenced to death, then has his sentenced commuted to life, and is now out on parole after 30 years. I would not necessarily like to see this guy in the ground, but I would sure like to see him in prison for the rest of his life.

Per CNN

Judge: No demonstration of any kind after verdict is read.

Muhammad is in the court room. Jury has been called in (from deliberation room).

Cheering!! Applause!! Thanks, jury, you done your job and done it well!

(I am not bloodthirsty. Death penalty is actually mercy for those who deserve it. And in the Manu Samhita if a person commits a capital crime and the head of government doesn't execute him, the government is at fault and reaps bad karma (=sin).

YAAAYY!
Now if only punishment was swift.

While in principle the death penalty doesn't trouble me, I guess I can understand generally disliking the death penalty, especially given some of the uncertainties that surround its application.

However, I cannot understand the absolutist position any more than I can understand the absolutist position on abortion: the world is just messier than that, and sometimes we do some things that might not be the morally ideal because the alternatives are morally more reprehensible. It seems to me that sometimes there are individuals who put themselves so far beyond the pale of tolerable behavior -- even tolerable criminality (tolerable in the sense that the punishment for it is limited) that they cannot be permitted to ever possibliy prey on society again. For me that militates for execution: it is certain and it avoids subsidizing the animal's existence. When we as a society face choices about the use of resources, I'm not willing to spend significant sums to house, feed and guard truly dangerous criminals. No one made them do the crime. I suppose an exaggerated sense of fairness might dictate announcing a head of time that murderers (without extenuating circumstances) would after a date certain no longer be tolerated, but the death penalty has been on the books and the criminals knew it was there.

I am Proud of the Judical System in Virginia and Jerry Kilgore.

When I spoke to him last year he said that Ashcroft assured him that the first trial would be in Virginia and he would definitley persue DEATH!

Congrats to him, he will be the next Governor of Va.
