The Word 'Queer' Belongs in the Mainstream
NY Newsday ^ | November 25, 2003 | Michelangelo Signorile

Posted on 11/25/2003 8:13:32 AM PST by presidio9

Degradation is in the eye of the beholder. The State of New York won't allow a young man to register his nonprofit group under the name "Queer Awareness" because it believes the word to be a slur.

But to Christopher Barton Benecke, the 24-year-old New York University student who founded the group and announced last week that he is taking the state to court, the word "queer" is anything but demeaning. As a proud and open homosexual in the year 2003, he says, he is queer.

Haven't the suits up in Albany, after all, heard of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" or "Queer as Folk"? If "Queer Eye," which has aired on NBC, passes muster with the Federal Communications Commission for broadcast over the public airwaves, why can't the State of New York's Department of State get with the times?

It may be one of the more absurd legal battles. But it does underscore that we're in a state of mass confusion regarding a word whose meaning has morphed more times in the past hundred or so years than Boy George makes costume changes in the very queer new Broadway musical "Taboo."

"At this point, nobody - least of all heterosexuals - knows whether it's OK to call someone queer or not. And, bewildering as that may be, in its own way it's also a sign of progress."

Not on your life. The constant corruption of language and the ability of one group to use a word with tacit approval while another less benighted group can be charged with a hate crime for uttering it is just the typical Orwellian/Marist game and business as usual.

I prefer sodomite. Has that one been deemed hate speech yet?

If sodomy is now a lifestyle choice, "usually disparaging" is no longer true; being queer is no longer considered queer.

I'd never use words I see as being uncouth and intellectually wanting. Just because some insipid tv show says queer, or some gangsta rapper says niggaz, doesn't mean I have to get in the gutter with them.

This reminds me of the discussion I had the other day about the word bastard. We've PC'd that word out of existance except as a funny swear word but not as a word to describe a child born illigitmately(sp). That was one of the earlier steps in destroying the family and normalizing gay marriage.

Do you ever read "old" books to your children and feel the need to replace "queer" and "gay" with "strange" and "happy" on the fly?

Add it to the long list of fine English words that have been stolen or co-opted...

"Queer" no longer means strange or odd (well, kinda...)

"Gay" no longer means happy.

"F*g" no longer means cigarette (in England)

etc.

Actually, I wouldn't risk using "happy" any longer. It's officially a nice word for a 'necrophiliac'. And "merry" means nowadays an enthusiast of bestiality, doncha know? Well, it's your choice, anyway! Oops, sorry...

Brendan Behan's play 'The Quare(queer) Fellow' referred to a man about to be hanged.

Not a bad metaphor for such a thanatic 'lifestyle choice'.

What? You mean there are words that Blacks can use but not white folk? I wanna make up a word for white people only! Oh Yeah, I remember now, J.Lo got into trouble cause she thought she was a hip Nigga too, but she was wrong.

While there is actually some history of blacks calling each other n* in a positive way, the historical connotation of white usage of the word is (almost?) uniformly negative, and in the modern era, racist.

I have argued with my black friends that they should avoid using it because it encourages stupid white boys to use it as well. Some blacks consider it appropriate only among blacks, some consider it always inappropriate.

Personally, I change the words to rap songs from nizzle to brizzle, etc.

The word "queer" used to be mentioned in whispers when applied to people of unnatural lusts. Homos are queer, strange breed of people who are trying with money and influence to make themselves the norm and this definitely cannot be allowed to occur.

I love the term 'hate speech'! Hate speech leaves no doubt about what you are talking about. When the word 'niggardly' comes into question you see what I mean.
