Recovery:The World Trade Center Recovery Operation at Fresh Kills
Fresh Kills
Fragment of Airplane
Elevator Floor Plaque
FBI and NYPD
American Flag Recovered
The exhibition consists of 65 photographs and over 50 objects recovered from the destroyed World Trade Center. Collectively, they help to tell the unheralded story of what happened when the recovery effort moved beyond Ground Zero to Fresh Kills landfill, the "city on the hill" where recovery workers toiled for long, tedious hours at a disheartening task.

I remember driving down the West Shore Expressway in Staten Island past the Fresh Kills landfill one night in early 2002. The top of the landfill where they were sorting the debris was lit up with portable stadium lights, and you could see it from miles away. It was a somber, and rather eerie, sight to behold.

Fresh Kills landfill
I know it's a corruption of an old Dutch phrase, but it does seem ironic.

Yes, I remember seeing the lights at fresh kills too. Somber and eerie describe it well.

Ever since I heard a Fresh Kills worker piously declare: "We're doing God's work here", I have wondered if the job had some fringe benefits. Guess I'm just a cynical paranoid.

The only info on the boxes is they were destroyed.

I think the number in the second paragraph is 1.8 million tons, not 1.8 tons.
