US forces capture wife of wanted former top Iraqi leader Wed Nov 26, 6:19 AM ET

TIKRIT, Iraq (AFP) - US forces have captured a wife and daughter of Izzat Ibrahim al-Duri, former number two to Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) and who US officials believe has been masterminding anti-coalition attacks.

The two, as well as the son of Duri's physician, were captured Tuesday in Samarra, north of Baghdad, said Colonel Bill MacDonald, spokesman for the US 4th Infantry Division.

"Task Force Ironhorse soldiers received information indicating that the wife and supporters of Izzat Ibrahim al-Duri were hiding in Samarra," MacDonald said Wednesday.

He said troops "raided a building and detained three people -- Duri's wife, his daughter and his physician's son." The three are being held for questioning, MacDonald told reporters.

"There is no indication Duri was in the vicinity," MacDonald added.

The United States is offering a reward of up to 10 million dollars for the capture of Duri himself.

Duri, former vice-president of Iraq (news - web sites)'s Revolution Command Council is believed to have more than one wife.

After ousted president Saddam Hussein, he is the senior Iraqi leader still at large and figures in sixth position on a coalition list of most-wanted Iraqis -- which includes those already caught.

Duri, now 61, was the prime mover behind the ousted regime's adoption of Islamist rhetoric through the 1990s and stands accused by the coalition of playing a leading role in the persistent attacks on its troops.

"Detained" would be a better choice of word.

No, no, no.... when we detain wives and children of terrorists and mass murders; we are imperial invaders.

When they blow up our wives and children, or their fellow countrymen's wives and children; they are freedom fighters from a religon of peace waging an unjust war against Capitolists who wish to steal oil.

Now, I hope this clears this whole mess up.

I can't wait for the day when we GET Saddam himself---preferably DEAD. I still can't figure out why we can't find Saddam. I mean, it's not like he is Eric Rudolph hiding out by himself in the sticks. Saddam is probably in a city and DIRECTING operations against American forces. Plus he has $25 million on his head, a huge incentive to turn him in.

It is my belief that Saddam died several months before the coalition strikes. We could not just walk in and demand his body, so we couldn't prove he was dead. His sons and kept the news secret, for their own safety.

Had his sons revealed Saddam was dead, there would have been various coup d'etat attempts by members of the inner circle, leaders from other countries, from Al Queda, etc.

It was to our benefit to have everyone believe Saddam was alive, and to the benefit of his sons/family as well.

I believe Saddam was buried by his sons in one of their unused underground vaults. We have been searching the vaults/tunnels that we captured or blew up, and have not found his body yet. I think that the location of the vault he was placed in was unknown to any but the most trusted, (and may be in Tikrit somewhere), and eventually may be found.

Maybe one day we will know what happened.

I do know that, even as the coalition strikes started, and there was news footage of Saddam touring the streets surrounded by his public, the man we saw was not Saddam.

The intelligence community has not seen the REAL Saddam for over 3 years. The one that the WORLD has seen and accepts as SADDAM is not him.

I think you may be right. Saddam may well be 'on the wrong side of the lawn'. I didn't think the 'Saddam' filmed with the crowd as the war started was really him either. There was something different about his body. The fake Saddam was shorter or rounder or more slump shouldered that the real Saddam.

He's dead Jim!

It doesn't really fit when you are talking about Iraq. I haven't seen any pictures of grassy lawns there. LOL

It's getting close to time to bring in Saddam's Hollywood double. Do a perp walk through the streets of downtown Baghdad surrounded by the 82nd on a Thursday. Say nothing to the media for the entire weekend.

And see just what satellite phone calls get made to who, as well as what rats come in from the cold asking for immunity or for rewards for turning in other Ba'athist remnants.

Then on Monday announce that the guy is a double.

Killer phys-ops value if handled properly.

You and I often agree on a lot of things.

This would be a disaster.

The world and even our own populace would no longer believe military releases.

If you think about it, finding Rudolph out in the sticks and on the same American soil occupied by the FBI and the rest of our Army of LEOs would seem to be easier than finding a jackal who hanily hides in the caves of his native land, aided, no doubt, by loyalist fellow-jackals who keep him well-fed on carrion and well-concealed in the depths of their outhouses......

Such might not be such a bad thing after all, if not the case already.......

Yes detained is a better word or material witnesses. I also heard on one of the cable channels that it was Al Duris ex-wife who ratted on him. : )

If one goes back to earlier news footage, Saddam is very old, and was very weak. He had cancer. He was holding a rifle up and shooting it as he does each year. He was barely able to hold the rifle up.

I believe he died soon after that. That was at least a year before the coalition strikes, and the intell-community has not seen the real Saddam since.
