[history]
November 29, 2003 -- THE president's stunning trip to Baghdad is already the subject of wild over-interpretation by the solipsists in the American chattering classes, who can't help but think the journey was really about them. Politically obsessed people are sure the trip was part of his reelection campaign, with Bush fans excited by and Bush opponents reeling in shock and awe from the public-relations coup.

The Democrats and the media can't stand for us to win in Iraq. Any good news there for America is bad news for them.

Violated a public trust?
Who's? The enemies?
No doubt whose side this lemon is on.

Any good news there for America is bad news for them. Boy, I'll say. No wonder they keep reaching for power, and for a monopoly in media. If they don't write all the epitaphs, their own is going to be uglier than the south end of a northbound donkey.
To: kattracks
Tom Rosenstiel, the highly respected director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism told Kurtz that the reporters on Air Force One violated a public trust because they didn't go public with news of the trip. Yeah, they deprived the Ba'athist gunners and Al-Q'aeda rocketeers of a big chance to kill George Bush. Which Rosenstiel would love to write about, as an exercise in "excellence in journalism", the Liberal way.
To: lentulusgracchus
He is a fool and all the world knows it now.Rosentiel, should DDay have been revealed if the reporter knew?
War requires secrecy and lies and reporters should be barred from all secrets and trips if they must tell. Telling should be prosecutable.

Well, I think he's just disappointed someone didn't blab and "break the story" (which is sacramental to those guys). I think he's also disappointed because things didn't turn out badly for Bush. If someone had blabbed, what would the headlines be right now, and wouldn't Hillary be standing tall, glowing about how she and that other senator went over there but the President cancelled his trip? That's what Rosenstool is upset about. Well, screw him.
To: kattracks
John Edwards told The New York Times that the trip was "daring move and great politics." When a leader is fundamentally a good man, he will do the right thing and often, it takes some daring to accomplish. 'Great politics' may be a seredipidous result, but ,unlike many vying for the job, it is not the prime motivator.

Brian asked the panel, "is Rosensttiel a moron for saying this?" Fred Barnes and Michael Barone cracked up.
To: MEG33
Rosentiel wouldn't have wanted DDay revealed, it helped take pressure of Stalin. How many reporters were against aid to Britain until Hitler attacked the USSR. Always remember the majority of the media are anti-American, anti-freedom and pro-communist

...some buffoon in the press corps might actually agree with the sort of buffoonery peddled by Rosenstiel and thereby have made it impossible for the president to visit American troops in Baghdad.
That is exactly what this ahole would have done, and that is abundantly clear. The objective journalists cannot have the President doing a very good thing which might simultaneously give him a bounce in the public eye. These people would have caused that trip to be aborted in a heartbeat, and any simpleton should be able to recognize that as the truth.

Rosenstiel would rather something really bad happened because a reporter leaked info about the visit. You know, give 'em something they could really chew on and "cover". If he had any wisdom at all, he would know that the reporters who traveled with President Bush, by keeping the visit a secret, exemplify the excellence in journalism he supposedly espouses.

Rosentiel, should DDay have been revealed if the reporter knew? Oh probably in his mind. The funny thing was that there undoubtedly were reporters who knew and kept their mouths shut until they were given the ok to tell. Every time I post I see this little reminder, "Loose lips sink ships." They got the concept then.
Reporting in peace time will end at worse with some politician having egg on his face. Big deal! Careless reporting in war time can end up with people dying. The stakes are different so the rules are different.

Thus, in Rosenstiel's view, it would have been better had the soldiers in that tent at the Baghdad airport not been paid a visit by the president - because that's what "excellence in journalism" demands. Apparently these whiners have focused entirely on the President and not on the troops. Show me one negative reaction- one negative comment made by a servicemember who was there. This WAS about the troops, plain and simple. President Bush knows that, we know that, and I suspect that privately, some of the 9 demwits begrudgingly know that as well. It is these whining media types who apparently still don't get it.

I'm trying to decide if Rosentiel preferred the trip be cancelled, or if he was hoping the plane would be brought down. Certainly, one or the other would have been the likely outcome if he'd had his way.

I have to say I have a modicum of respect for those journalists on the plane for NOT blabbing anyway. Then again, if I were threatened with "We're gonna tell everyone in Iraq that it was YOU that couldn't keep quiet," I'd have had no trouble with the secret either.

Charter an old 707 from a French outfit. Paint the stars and stripes on the side, extra large.
Tell everyone Bush is back for Christmas.
ETA so the sun is just right for a photo shoot.
Mr. Rosentiel and all his pals can fill the plane...
Think he he would go?
