Hillary Strategy on Today Show: Praise Troops, Bash Bush
The Today Show

Posted on 12/01/2003 4:45:40 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

In a just-completed interview on The Today Show, Hillary Clinton, back from her trip to Iraq and Afghanistan, hewed to a very clear strategy: praise the troops while bashing President Bush.

Clinton was aided and abetted by her chief media sycophant, Katie Couric. Try to imagine what an appropriate opening question would have been. Perhaps the neutral "how would you describe the situation in Iraq?" Or if someone wanted to be friendly to the Bush administration, "is there good news in Iraq that is going unreported?"

Instead, Couric helpfully put the worst spin on things, asking "How bad is it in Iraq?"

By the way, it should be mentioned that Hillary was theoretically joined in the interview by Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed, who had also accompanied her abroad. But the most unprepossessing Reed had clearly been carefully chosen for the trip as someone who would not possibly upstage Hillary, and went largely ignored in the interview.

Sticking to her "up with the troops, down with Bush" strategy, Hillary opened by enthusing that "the military is doing a terrific job."

But then, Hillary solemnly opined that we "don't have enough of the right mix of troops" in Iraq. Obviously those years of carefully choosing the right troops to serve hors d'oeuvres at White House receptions has made her quite the expert. "It's clear we need more MPs, intelligence and civil affairs troops."

"What we're doing now is not an effective strategy. We need to get the UN involved."

Then it was back to smarmy troop-praising: "I can't say enough positively about what our military is doing on the ground."

Reed was then permitted a brief word edgewise, Couric inquiring about "how US soldiers are holding up, since November was the bloodiest month since "so-called" major operations were declared over in May?"

Reed stated that morale is good, particularly since soldiers know when they're going home. But the next wave of troops won't have replacements lined up, and that will be a problem.

Hillary's plan for Iraq? "Short term, we have to move an quickly as possible to internationalize with a new UN mandate. We need 'the legitimacy of the UN' to move forward."

Couric: "Will the Bush administration be receptive?"

Clinton: "They have to be." And gosh knows you don't want to disobey Nurse Cratched!

Regarding W's surprise visit to Iraq, Couric observed that it "has been getting mixed views. Some have praised it as a huge morale boost. Others called it a big photo op." Of course Couric never asked Clinton if her own trip was a photo op.

Clinton: "I think (the President's trip) was both. I applaud the President. It sends a message of support. But on other hand it isn't a substitute for a plan to increase security or to eventually create more independence for Iraqis."

Next it was time to bash the exit strategy. Again, Couric could have asked a neutral question, asking Hillary to assess our exit strategy. Instead, she served a softball with a negative slant.

Couric: "Is our exit strategy being crafted to get us out quickly at the risk of not creating a true democracy?"

Hillary, in one of her biggest shots at the President, flatly stated: "our exit strategy is being crafted by political considerations rather than by what is good for Iraq."

By the way, not only did Hillary did 90% of the talking, even when the hapless Reed got in a few words Clinton did her famous head nod, visually distracting attention from her sad sack Sancho Panza.

Hillary also insisted on talking about Afghanistan. Her take: Karzai administration doing a good job trying to bring country together, but we need to improve security, secure borders and get NATO more involved.

One more pure powder puff performance from Couric. Not one question challenging any of Hillary's views, quoting from Bush administration supporters or raising the blatantly political motivation of Hillary's trip.

And not to be too unkind to the junior Senator from NY. Well, OK, to be very unkind but frank, she seemed to be sporting a Nixonesque 5 o'clock shadow in the chin area. Might just have been the lighting, but not a good look. Oh, and as far as I could see, Hillary seemed to be wearing the black version of Ol' Crusty.

You mean she didn't bring her own, reuseable cheramic cup on the trip? What will the environmentalists think of her???

Oh, and Hillary, the UN was there! Rember, they ran away after one RPG was fired at them. I'll trust the US troops to stick around until the job is done.

You were correct basically stating that this was Katie's most puff ball interview yet. It seems that Katie and Hillary planned the whole interview last night.

As for Reed was Hillary's arm behind him and pulling a lever to make his mouth move.

If I were a soldier, I would surmise from this obsessive push to get the UN involved that Hillary Clinton and her cronies don't think I and my fellow U.S. soldiers can handle the job. What a put-down.

From the Drudge-linked coverage of her 'tour':

"We have to exert all of our efforts militarily, but the outcome (in Iraq) is not assured," she said…Clinton said it is still an open question whether the Bush administration can make the transition in Iraq from a war zone to an independent, representative government. In an interview with the Associated Press, she called for United Nations assistance in the process…The morale of the troops, she said, "is very high," but she said the military personnel with whom she spoke wanted to know "how the people at home feel about what we are doing."…"Americans are wholeheartedly proud of what you are doing,' " Clinton said she replied, "but there are many questions at home about the (Bush) administration's policies. "

http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20031129/1053287.asp

Very nice of the hissing witch. Go over, praise the troops, and at the same time whisper some poison about a possible quagmire and confused leadership. In the linked article, notice that she also calls for increasing the military's size by 10,000 troops. Where was that sentiment when they carved up the military during her administration?

It is also interesting (and Republicans better take heed) that Hillary and Reed are taking the tack of calling for speeding up delivery of Humvees with more armor and more body armor for the troops. The Humvees are in the pipeline somewhere, but the beast does the expedient thing of calling for 'speeding up' delivery. It would be interesting to discover if she, in fact, has voted for the kinds of spending bills that would have allowed such changes and funding. I kind'a doubt it.

BEWARE OF THIS TACTIC: There is NO real concern for troops when a politician, who despises the American idea of the citizen soldier, hates the organizations and traditions which they serve, spits on their codes and sense of patriotism, criticizes their missions, leadership and the country which they serve and, yet, strives to provide the finest in Band-Aids with which to bind their wounds.

There is also a lesson in this for many on the right side of the aisle. The RAT Wellstone made a career out of 'caring' for veterans by adding a little pork to all kinds of bills to help secure the VA, VFW and American Legion votes. This tour by the beast is further evidence that the RAT's have patented the 'caring' for the troops while hating the military angle. Lackadaisical Republicans and pro-military conservatives better be aware of that strategy and do some heavy lifting for the troops on their own.

It seems the talkingpointsmemokeywordoftheday is bloodiest. I listened a few moments to Wolfe on CNN yesterday and he used variations of it 4 or 5 times within 2 minutes.

Point of reason and comparison: Iraq is roughly the size of California. How many die in California each month? How many die atrocious deaths due to murder or accident? ...But, this is the only point the LibDems seem to have left to harp on.

We need 'the legitimacy of the UN' to move forward...

Legitimacy of the United Nations? Legitimacy from that place simply boggles the mind! Mrs. Clinton, were she able, would sell our Sovereignty, our Republic, our freedoms to the United Nations – as long a Bill were made Secretary General that is.............she had the nerve to sit among some of our finest wearing their uniforms of the American military and propose this idea. I am surprised she didn’t show Kofi’s blue helmets of the UN and say these are the proper colors not your ‘drab’ camouflage colors. She would pull the plug on the military in a heart beat, reducing these proud warriors to policing America and any other upstart country that tried to be free. Mrs. Clinton wants to establish The Third Way as her way leaving the US Constitution, law and the Republic in the trash bin of history.

Let 'perky katie' hear from you this morning.

Hillary's motive is quite simple. She is a socialist borderline Marxist. She does not care that her comments hurt our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. She knows full well these comments give aid and support to the enemy that is trying to kill our soldiers. In her ideology this is perfectly acceptable if it will bring her into power so she can continue her efforts to make this country a socialist country.

She is evil.

This section, right here, really gets the stomach acids moving first thing in the morning. This is very good word smithing. I'm sitting here in the CTZ willing the hands on the clock to move so I can call my Senator in D.C. and ask for charges of sedition to be brought against this besotted caricature of Pinochio (sp?).

Sorry, but for some reason, Bill, Hill, and Gore have always reminded me of wooden dummies. I guess it's because in the case of all three, their inadequate attempts at presenting to the public the impression of decent human beings has always seemed so very exaggerated and unnatural.

In watching this witch perform for many years now, it seems that every time she goes on the attack it is to deflect attention from breaking news about her or Bill. I think she knows there is going to be a campaing finance scandal around the bend and she can say that they are investigating her only because she has been so anti-Bush. We'll see.

Couric: "Is our exit strategy being crafted to get us out quickly at the risk of not creating a true democracy?"

Exit strategy again? The exit strategy is to win, and establish a new government in Iraq. Why is there not this obsession with an exit strategy for Kosovo, where our tropps were supposed to stay for six months, seven years ago? Katie can go to he** as far as I'm concerned!

And as far as Hillary Clinton's views on any military situation are concerned, they are about as useful and pertinent as teets on a bull!
