Arab News Urges Hillary to Run in 2004 - as VP

The official press organ of Saudi Arabia says that New York Sen. Hillary Clinton's trip to the Middle East shows she's planning to run for president in 2004. But ArabNews.com advises that if Sen. Clinton ever wants to win the White House, she should first run as Gen. Wesley Clark's VP.

"Given that [President] Bush still seems ahead among pollsters, Mrs. Clinton would be taking little political risk if Clark were defeated in the presidential election," an Arab News editorial advised Saturday.

If Clark won, however, the Saudi media organ suggested that the former first lady could transform the vice presidential role into "a much more high-profile and active arm of the executive."

Most importantly, "This would provide her with a platform to launch her own run at the White House in 2008, if Clark chose to stand down, or 2012, when he would have to leave office."

Arab News notes that "there may be many in the Middle East who would have great hopes" if a Democrat were to defeat Bush in 2004.

What the paper's editorial didn't say is that the Saudi royal family has pledged to give the Clintons between one and twenty million dollars for Mr. Clinton's presidential library, according to a report by columnist Robert Novak last year.
