Beyond 'Reagans' Hoopla, a critical, typical biopic

The oldest rule of Hollywood must be that nothing calls attention to a product quite like controversy. So it's surprising that Reagan loyalists leaned so heavily on CBS to reject "The Reagans" last month, thereby creating much anticipatory ado about an average docudrama that certainly accentuates the negative about the former president and his wife.

Like to see his take on a TV movie featuring Eleanor talking FDR into letting the Japanese hit us first.

"The lead performances are both strong; without them, "The Reagans" would be a dull three hours."

I started to watch but coudn't take more than about twenty minutes. Contrary to the opinion above, I thought that Brolin kissed his career goodbye with this POS. (Not that he has had much of a career to begin with.)

The lead performances are both strong; without them, "The Reagans" would be a dull three hours. Brolin manages to capture Reagan's speech pattern and facial expressions without playing them for parody.

Only if you believe Reagan was a buffoon, not the man who won two Presidential elections by landslides, ended the cold war without firing shot, restored American's faith in America, and intiated tax reform that propelled the nation into economic growth. Only someone consumed by their hatred of Republicans would not see this as a hatchet job.

I saw this headline this morning, along with a similar one from the Hartford Courante. Pretending a pencil is a pen will not make that pencil become (**POOF**) a pen, and pretending a hitpiece that backfired so badly that even most of the left didn't like it will not make it ANYTHING but (**poof**) a plain old, normal, critical docudrama is anything but a hitpiece that backfired so badly that even most of the left didn't like it. Period.

My email to Mr. Gilbert pointed out that we should be equally outraged when Hollywood writes an agenda-driven script and makes up events and statements in order to fulfill that agenda, regardless of whom such films are about. I wouldn't be so concerned about films like this if it weren't for the fact that most Americans are completely ignorant of US history and historical figures, and what they know comes from Hollywood productions.
