Since President Bush declared an end to major combat on May 1... the FREE American press still hasn't thanked our troops, our military leaders, or Pres. Bush for risking all fighting for their freedom.

I read two articles today and have heard it mentioned on TV..the carrier landing that backfired.

I was so upset about that carrier landing that I found the old thread, pictures,a video and thoroughly enjoyed myself remembering the great sailors and their appreciation of their CIC and his salute to a ship that had been deployed for 10 months.!I reread the speech,"still have a dangerous job."

Good job, troops.Thank you for a job well done.

Someone in the non-FR Universe picked up our signal. (^:

I did write the list (in response to the daily enemy press's "Since May 1st..." campaign to undermine morale of our troops, and the homefront ~ the daily casualty hyping with mocking, symbolic reference to the President's USS Lincoln landing) ~ and sent it out to my list. Someone else may have done the same.

Thanks to everyone who passes on the successes of the troops to the outside world.

If you want on or off my Pro-Coalition ping list, please Freepmail me. Warning: it is a high volume ping list on good days. (Most days are good days).

We thank God everyday that his injuries were not as bad as they could of been, there have been several soldiers killed in the same type of accidents. Trust me this Mom will be scouring over every inch of him to make sure his injurys healed up to enough to suit me. The first chance he had to use the video cam I made him put the back of his head to the camera, pull up his shirt and turn around and drop his drawers so I could see (sort of) what had happened, I think I really embarrassed him over that one but didnt really care. Yes his buddies were all in the background laughing but understood that if I didnt see they got no more goodie boxes from me :)

. . . I greatly enjoyed the following article from Jack Kelly:

Doing the right thing is often the shrewdest political move

http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com | Doing the right thing is often the shrewdest political move. President Bush got an uproarious welcome from 600 surprised soldiers assembled for Thanksgiving dinner in the mess tent at Baghdad International Airport.

"For two hours, the president walked among us, not a receiving line where we came to him, stiff and formal, but coming to us, reading our name tags on our uniforms and greeting us by name," a soldier who was there said in an email to Andrew Sullivan.

"He looked me in the eye when he shook my hand, he joked with some, whispered to others, spoke a little Spanish to my friend. Two hours of almost non-stop motion, how exhausting after a 12-hour flight. He did it to be with us, and we appreciate it."

Soldiers who didn't get to see the president also were appreciative. Reuters correspondent Dean Yates interviewed Sgts. Aaron Hildernbrandt and Gilbert Nail in Tikrit.

"I think that shows real personal courage," said Nail. "It's a total morale booster."

"That is absolutely awesome," said Hildernbrandt.

"This is definitely a good move for morale," said Pvt. Michael Debratta at a checkpoint in downtown Baghdad. "It makes us feel better that our leader was actually here on a holiday."

CPT Roger Mayrulet said the president's visit was even more of a boost to Iraqi morale.

"I had Iraqis wishing me 'Happy Thanksgiving' all day today," Mayrulet said in an email to National Review Online. "They only learned of the holiday by finding out the reason why Bush came to visit us."

"I went to a nearby restaurant to buy dinner and IMN was displaying Bush's speech to his troops," recounted Zeyad, an Iraqi web logger. "Everyone stopped eating and stared at the tv...I'm still shocked to this moment that he took the risk to come here. I used to like him before, but now I admire the guy."

Admiration is too mild a word to describe the response of Alaa, a middle aged Iraqi engineer who writes the web log "The Mesopotamian:"

"We know that you have come, not as the president of an invading nation, but as a friend who wishes to renew a commitment to our people...It gives us pain that the visit is so short and that the masses cannot in the present circumstances come out and give you the welcome you deserve, but the day will come when the millions will come out to welcome the best friend that the Mesopotamian people have ever had, and we will be among the most devoted and allied people that America will ever have.

"The bones in the mass graves salute you, Avenger of the Bones. Hail, friend and ally. Hail, Sheikh of Sheikhs."

"I am very proud for the great, great visit of Mr. President to Iraq," said a woman from Mosul in an email to NRO. "The reaction from Iraqi people is very very great. They feel it is good support and insure American are going to stay until the job is done."

There was carping from the usual suspects. European and Arab newspapers and some Democratic party spokesmen described the trip as a publicity stunt. The French newspaper Liberation implied it had been done to draw attention away from Sen. Hillary Clinton's trip to Afghanistan and Iraq.

I would not have wanted to be within lamp-hurling range of Hillary when she received word of the President's trip. The contrast between the riotous reception he got and the tepid welcome she received is not the sort of thing Democrats would want to put in a campaign highlight reel.

At Thanksgiving dinner in Afghanistan, the soldiers were more interested in the turkey than in their distinguished visitor, according to Geraldo Rivera of Fox News. The response at lunch the next day in Baghdad was more restrained still:

"(Hillary) seemed disappointed at the cool reception she got at the CPA mess hall for lunch," said the web logger "John Galt," who was there. Most just stared silently. A few left."

The carping about Bush's trip diminishes Bush's critics, not the president. Democrats talk about leadership. Bush provides it. American soldiers - and most Iraqis - know the difference.

Forbes is great, but Casper Wineberger seems a little behind..... doncha think?

Current Events

More From Caspar Weinberger

alt
One of the problems of our postwar results in Iraq is that most of the principal U.S. press outlets have been reporting, to the exclusion of almost anything else, the negative events since our military stunningly toppled Saddam Hussein's brutal regime. It's time to redress the balance and present our readers with some facts that demonstrate how well America's goals in Iraq are being achieved.

Let's begin by acknowledging that all is not perfect in Iraq. Crime rates are high, almost as high as New York City's. Our forces have had to deal with the depredation and senseless destruction loosed on the country by some 100,000 of Iraq's criminals, whom Saddam released from jail shortly before our troops went in.

What we are seeing now is the uniform disdain and ill-founded criticisms of those who opposed the war from the beginning; those who, because of next year's presidential election, oppose everything the Administration or President Bush does or says; and those countries, such as France and Germany, that are angered by any suggestion of American success anywhere and which fear their huge and improvident prewar loans to Iraq may not be repaid. Many of these countries are also motivated by equally tawdry reasons of trade.

But despite all the negative reportage there is a great deal of good news--especially for those who hope to see a free and democratically led Iraq living in peace with itself and its neighbors.

Education

Nearly all of Iraq's schools are open, and data from 10 of the primary and secondary schools showed an encouraging increase in enrollment. All 22 universities and 43 technical institutes are also open. In October universities received 1,500 computers, and South Korea is helping establish Internet centers.

Teachers now earn 12 to 25 times their former salaries. The Economist reported that before the war a Baghdad primary school teacher was paid the equivalent of $6 a month; her husband, a factory overseer, earned $13 a month. Today their combined monthly income is close to $450; for the first time they are able to buy many standard consumer goods.

Public Health

All 240 hospitals and 1,200 primary health clinics are open. Spending for public health is more than 26 times what it was during Saddam's regime, and doctors' salaries are 8 times what they were. More than 22 million vaccine doses have been given to children, and more than two-thirds of drinking water supplies have been restored.

Security

By Oct. 24 we had trained some 85,500 Iraqis: 55,000 police; 6,400 border guards; an 18,700-man Facilities Protection Corps; 700 new Iraqi Army graduates, with the goal of 27 battalions trained in a year; a 4,700-man Civil Defense Corps; and an additional 10,000 Iraqis in training for these forces. In addition, 32 countries have more than 24,000 troops on the ground in Iraq, including the Polish-led forces that are in command of the south-central part of the country.

Our training and recruiting personnel have had to deal with the fact that, in order to survive, most Iraqis had to have had some association with or given some support to Saddam and his Baathist Party regime. It is therefore slow work ensuring that those we are training are suitable for the work in the new Iraq.

Public Services

Years of neglect wreaked major damage on Iraqi water, power and sewerage systems. All are being repaired and improved. Oil production, even from oilfields urgently in need of modernization following decades of calculated neglect, averaged 1.9 million barrels a day in October and is moving closer to the prewar level of 3 million.

Power generation reached 4,518 megawatts of electricity in early October, compared with 300 megawatts, prewar. Three-fourths of the prewar level of telephone service has been restored.

The courts are in session, and some 50,000 claims against the old government have been filed with the bar association.

A new currency has been issued and the independent central bank opened two months after the war ended. It took three years for post-WWII occupied Germany to do this.

The Future

On July 13 Coalition Provisional Authority Administrator Paul Bremer appointed the all-Iraqi Governing Council. On Nov. 15 the CPA and the Council committed to a political timetable for Iraq. As the White House announced, the plan "meets a key mutual objective of the Coalition and the Iraqi people: the restoration of sovereignty to a body chosen by the citizens of Iraq and based in a legal framework. It also commits Iraq to a process for drafting a permanent, democratic constitution that protects the rights of all citizens."

On Nov. 6 President Bush signed the Iraq and Afghanistan supplemental appropriations bill into law. This will bring $87 billion to our global war on terror. It will help support our servicemen and -women with weapons, equipment and salaries; build stable democratic societies in these two countries, as well as train and equip those citizens who are fighting to defend and secure their rights; upgrade schools and hospitals; and repair infrastructure and improve services, such as water, electricity and sanitation.

It wasn't until last month that papers began reporting on the progress that's been made in Iraq. We must keep in mind that it has been only seven months since our military brought down Saddam and that it will take time for the Iraqis to build the foundation for a free, self-governing country.

Lol, I like Casper. He's been solidly behind the troops and the war effort from the beginning... as reliable and reassuring as Ollie North (imho *g*). Maybe he's repeating himself for his deaf and distracted DC neighbors...the Dems. who missed 9-11 while still obsessing over their failed election theft attempt. (^:

Thank you for the kind words, windchime. I'm glad we helped get Chief some attention, though he was destined to be discovered. His great blog cut through the 'quagmire news' from the beginning, and gave us more ammo to fight the press.

FReepers are awesome. (^:
