Victims' kin blast WTC video game Challenges players to shoot down jets before they hit towers

Families of Sept. 11 victims are outraged by a French Internet video game in which players shoot down passenger jets before they hit the World Trade Center towers.

"My daughter was on one of the planes," Tom Roger, father of slain American Airlines flight attendant Jean Roger, told the New York Daily News. "To think people are making it a game is pretty bizarre. But there are a lot of sick people out there."

"New York Defender" has been played more than 1.5 million times since it was launched on the website Uzinagaz.com one month after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Jonathan Pitcher of Paris, who runs the website, said he's not trying to make fun of the killing of 2,752 people.

"After the attacks, we felt there was nothing we could do," he told the New York paper. "But with the game, you could pretend to defend the World Trade Center."

Players shoot at the planes as they attack the towers, but the jets keep coming at a faster pace, and when a few strike the buildings the towers collapse.

Pitcher said he and his colleagues "wanted to show there isn't any way to win against terrorism. Because it doesn't matter how many planes you shoot. There are always new planes."

State lawmakers building support for a law curbing violent and sexually explicit video games commented on Pitcher's game at a press conference.

"Is that an outrage, or what?" said Assemblyman Robert Straniere, a Republican from Staten Island. "What warped mind would want to create such a video?"

The sister of a victim on the 105th floor of Tower 2, Lorraine Lee, called it "horrible."

"I think it further desensitizes us to the realities of this thing," said Patricia Reilly of Staten Island. "I've seen some weird things in the last two years, but this is the first game."

Another unfounded attack on video games. The goal of the game is to save the towers. That is all.

WND is overzealous in their choice of 'targets'. A few pixels on an obscure French website, and they hype it into a dangerous un American phenomenon which hurts the victims' families.

WND is reopening wounds of the families with an inciteful, disingenuous editorial piece delivered as news. This is a non issue.

In each targeted plane there are about 100 to 200 innocent passengers.

I have lost a sister and niece and my son in car crashes.

How about they go after OnStar and that freaking commercial about "I'm bleeding. I don't know how bad. Someone came across the center line"???

OnStar is making money off ads like that. Am I the only one who finds that ad obscene?

OnStar has saved a number of lives. It is important that people are aware of this service, hence the advertising. Video games are for entertainment. This one is particularly sick and I hope there is a special place in hell for the writers and producers of this so-called game.

Sorry about your sister neice and son.

Now that I think about it, that ad probably is obscene. They could convey the same message much less dramatically. But I think you are super-sensitive to it because of your experiences. The fact is, Onstar probably will save lives by making responses to accidents faster. That makes the ad difficult to weigh.

Personally, I think we should automate driving. It would almost eliminate accidents, injury lawyers, car insurance, body shops, traffic fines, medical claims, etc. The advantage to the economy of doing so would be huge (after the adjustment period). And it would also free the elderly, sick and disabled who can't drive. Not to mention being a boone to parents who wouldn't necessarily have to drive their kid to ball practice.

In fact, I bet that if the government could quantify how much it spends in Medicare, Medicaid and Disability due to auto accidents it would be a huge amount of $$$. If the government could devote just 10% of that amount to automating driving, I bet the program would have an extremely fast payback.

How about an American web site where you can play a game defending Paris from assorted moslem hordes? Defend the Eifel Tower from hijacked Airbuses. Stop the suicide car bombers before they blow up the Louvre and Notre Dame.

It would be "just a video game", and the french can show us how sophisticated and europeon they are. In reality, they'd probably demand the UN try Bush for "aiding and abetting genocide".

Perhaps we ought to come up with a video game depicting old people dying of heat stroke while family members race back to there houses to turn the air conditioner on.

"Because it doesn't matter how many planes you shoot. There are always new planes."

And this is the point that the Eclair Spined Frenchman wants to burn into everyone's mind who come across the game!

Well, lets just bring the boys back from the middle east and tell the families of those servicemen who have given their lives to date, that we were mad and misguided by our national anger, but now we know better, and we are now ready to embrace Allah, and become good Muslims, so that we will not be attacked again.
After all, Israel, Christianity, and a little thing like human dignity and freedom are just not worth dying for!

Imagine Nokia or Uniden having commercials touting how "We're Always There ™ " while you listen to some of those ghastly 9-1-1 tapes where the last words are from someone about to be murdered.
