What's the New "Pager" Icon About? (Vanity Request for Help)
Free Republic

Posted on 12/07/2003 4:31:44 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

I noticed this morning that a little speaker icon had popped up next to my screen name, and when I let the browser settle on it, the word "pager" appears. When I click on it, it just takes me to my comments, same as clicking on "New Messages."

Could someone please explain this innovation? Thanks.

I clicked on it and came right back to the same page. I'm sure it has SOME purpose!

Thanks, though I'm still a little confused. Since either "new messages" or "mail" would turn bold if I had mail or new posts, what does the speaker icon add?

And after clicking on it my 'back' button doesn't work. It keeps returning me to the same page.

You need to put your ear up against the icon on the screen .... Then you can hear it.

Is your browser java enabled? It's working fine for me.

Try clicking on this link... http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/notify

If that doesn't take you to the pager, your browser is deficient.

Could someone please explain this innovation?

It's a little notifier that chimes when you have incoming posts or Freepmails. It's been around for a couple of years. Very handy.

It's good there's finally a short cut for it. I always have one window dedicated to the pager.

There should be a little button on the front of your computer that has a light near it somewhere...

So these are the ugly-@ss fonts everyone was talking about, eh? I wonder why it took me an extra day to see them?

How is this different than 'My Comments' or 'Mail' link being bolded?

It refreshes itself every 60 seconds or so. The pager chimed to notify me of your post. Clicking on it when it chimes will take you directly to the first incoming Freepmail (if you have one) or to "My Comments."

This way, if I'm reading an article, and someone has written or posted to me, I'm notified by the pager if I have a window open that's dedicated to it.

I didn't get a screen or a working link when I clicked on the icon.......

What I did get was an item I couldn't kill even in TaskMan.....and eventually I had to kill everything else and reboot.

Buggy little pain in the butt, is what it is.

Unless it's one of those boutique ideas that MS builds into their latest release of Explorer, that they then go around suggesting that people add to their sites for "enhanced functionality".........and which are designed to drive people to the new release.

Or am I being too conspiratorial and untrusting?

No, but if you are using a Popup Stopper, this baby is going to be hard to "catch" the first time out!

I've never had a problem with it, and I've used it for a couple of years.

I've used it on Netscape 4, 6, and 7; Explorer 5, 5.1, and 5.2; and Safari 1 for both Mac OS 9 and OS X. Can't recall if I've ever tried it in Opera.

I know folks who've been using it in Explorer and Netscape on Windows in that time as well.

It's got to be either the moose or the FBI.

Actually, in my limited experience with this stuff, certain applications do not get along when running simultaneously. You may have had something running prior that contributed to the crash.

Morning, Mimi. ;-)

(I've been waiting to say that.)

BTW, mine works fine, but the little "click" from the page refreshing every minute will drive me nuts. I'll have to go digging for the way to disable that.
